Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Ornellaia shows an intense, vibrant ruby-red colour with beautiful depth at the core and a luminous rim. The nose is complex and expressive, opening with dark fruits—blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum—layered with enticing spicy and balsamic notes. Aromas of black pepper, sage, Mediterranean herbs, cedar, and a touch of graphite and cocoa emerge with air, giving the bouquet a multi-dimensional, almost sculpted quality. On the palate, this is both rich and energetic: full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with a dense, fine-grained tannin structure that coats the mouth without ever feeling heavy. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and cassis-driven intensity, Merlot adds plush texture and ripe fruit, while Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc lift the wine with floral, spicy, and herbal nuances. Fresh acidity runs through the core, keeping the wine lively and focused, and the finish is long, persistent, and remarkably fresh, echoing dark fruits, spice, and savoury herbs. Production
Ornellaia’s vineyards lie on the gently rolling hills near the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, where a mosaic of soils—ranging from sandy and alluvial to clay and gravel—combine with maritime breezes and abundant sunshine to produce grapes of great concentration and balance. The 2019 Ornellaia is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, meticulously harvested by hand parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, each variety and plot is vinified separately, typically undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, followed by maceration to extract colour, flavour, and tannin. The wines are then transferred to French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) for maturation, during which blending takes place to create the final cuvée. Extended aging in barrel and bottle before release allows the components to integrate and the wine’s hallmark complexity and refinement to emerge.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Bolgheri Superiore is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, venison, or game birds in rich jus. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano, or well-matured hard cheeses, as well as truffle dishes and wild mushroom ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux-style glasses to let the aromatics unfold. Decanting is highly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic range; older bottles in future years may require a shorter, more delicate decant.
