Description
The 2019 Susana Balbo Nosotros Single Vineyard Nómade is a pinnacle Malbec from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley, Mendoza – a wine crafted only in the finest vintages from the single vineyard that shines brightest each year. This flagship cuvée brings together precision, power and elegance, offering an unforgettable expression of high‑altitude Argentine terroir. Awarded 99 points by James Suckling and ranked #1 in his Top 100 Argentine Wines 2022, it is a collector‑worthy bottle that encapsulates the very best of modern Mendoza.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Nosotros Nómade shows an intense, deep purple‑ruby core with inky concentration and vibrant violet highlights along the rim. The nose is layered and complex, opening slowly with aromas of ripe blueberry and black cherry, then evolving into notes of fresh mint, crushed violets, graphite and wet stone, alongside refined cocoa powder and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this is a medium to full‑bodied Malbec that marries richness with remarkable freshness. Dark forest fruits and blue berries are wrapped in finely woven tannins, with a mouthfeel that is plush yet impeccably structured. The minty, mineral streak from Paraje Altamira’s stony soils adds tension and length, while hints of dark chocolate, espresso and sweet spice emerge with air. The finish is extraordinarily long and persistent – the kind of wine whose flavor seems to echo for minutes. Still youthful and tightly knit, it has excellent aging potential; cellaring for 10–15 years (and likely beyond) will allow the tannins to soften further and the aromatic complexity to deepen.
Production
Sourced from a single, top‑performing vineyard in Paraje Altamira, in the higher, cooler reaches of the Uco Valley, this Malbec is born from alluvial soils rich in stones and calcium carbonate that contribute to its marked minerality and precision. Grapes are carefully hand‑harvested at optimum ripeness to preserve balance and purity of fruit, then meticulously sorted to ensure only pristine berries make it into the fermenters. The 2019 Nosotros Nómade was fermented in large 6,500‑liter wooden vats, allowing for gentle extraction and fine tannin development, before being aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 80% of which were new. This combination of high‑altitude terroir, low yields, attentive handwork and tailored maturation yields a wine of great depth, finesse and signature site expression.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Malbec that shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think dry‑aged ribeye with chimichurri, slow‑braised short ribs, venison with a red‑wine reduction, or lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic. It also works beautifully with truffle‑infused dishes, mushroom ragù, hard aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Manchego, and high‑cacao dark chocolate. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 1.5–2 hours before serving is strongly recommended in its youth to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its many layers.
Producer
Susana Balbo is widely regarded as one of Argentina’s most visionary and influential winemakers, celebrated as the country’s first female oenologist when she graduated in 1981. After more than two decades crafting wines for leading Argentine estates, she founded her own winery in 1999 in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, originally named Dominio del Plata and later rebranded as Susana Balbo Wines in 2016. Nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes, the estate has become a benchmark for high‑end, terroir‑driven Argentine wines, particularly Malbec from top sites in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. With a philosophy summarized as “where there’s a will, there’s a wine,” Susana Balbo has played a pivotal role in elevating Argentina’s international reputation, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards worldwide. The Nosotros Single Vineyard Nómade stands as her ultimate expression – a moving target that follows the best vineyard each vintage, capturing both the story of place and the evolution of modern Argentine fine wine.
