Description
The 2019 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena is a benchmark Napa Valley estate wine, uniting power, freshness, and precision in a beautifully polished style. Sourced from the organically farmed Spottswoode estate vineyards on the western edge of St. Helena, it reflects one of Napa’s most coveted terroirs, where cool evening breezes and alluvial clay soils yield Cabernet of exceptional purity and elegance. First planted in the 19th century and stewarded by the Novak family since the 1970s, Spottswoode has become synonymous with classically structured, cellar‑worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep garnet to near‑opaque purple hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youth and long life ahead. The nose is expressive yet refined, layering cassis, black cherry, and ripe plum with notes of violets, lavender, dark chocolate, graphite, and subtle cedar spice.
On the palate, this is full‑bodied and concentrated without feeling heavy or overbearing. Sleek, fine‑grained tannins frame flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, and blackberry, intertwined with hints of licorice, baking spices, and a chalky, mineral edge. There is a cooling, lively acidity that brings lift and freshness, balancing the wine’s richness and giving it real drive through the long, persistent finish with its softly dusty, clay‑like texture. While already impressive with a short decant, the 2019 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 15–20+ years in a good cellar, gaining complexity and even greater harmony.
Production
Spottswoode’s estate vineyard sits on the western outskirts of St. Helena in Napa Valley, where alluvial clay and gravel soils from the Sulphur Creek series offer excellent drainage and naturally moderate yields—ideal for high‑quality Cabernet. Cool marine breezes funnel through the gap between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas range, extending the growing season and allowing the fruit to ripen evenly while retaining freshness. The 42‑acre estate is predominantly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with small parcels of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc, all farmed organically (and widely recognized for sustainable, meticulous vineyard care). Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification typically involves fermentation in stainless steel or small tanks with attentive temperature control and gentle extraction, followed by aging in French oak barrels—predominantly new—to build structure and complexity while preserving the purity of the estate’s distinctive fruit character.
Food & Serving
This refined yet powerful Cabernet is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think dry‑aged ribeye, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, short ribs braised in red wine, or venison with a dark berry reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle‑infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decant 1–2 hours before serving in its youth to allow the aromas and tannins to fully open; as the wine gains bottle age (8–10+ years), a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will usually suffice.
Producer
Spottswoode Estate, founded originally in 1882, is one of Napa Valley’s historic properties and a reference point for classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena. Under the stewardship of second‑generation sisters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, Spottswoode has built a reputation for precision farming, environmental stewardship, and consistently top‑rated estate Cabernets.
