Description

The 2019 Sierra Cantabria Amancio Jeroboam (3L) is one of Rioja Alta’s most coveted single-vineyard expressions, presented here in a rare large-format bottle. Crafted exclusively from the finest fruit of four top parcels in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, this is a powerful yet finely etched Tempranillo that showcases the precision and ambition of the Eguren family. Amancio has become a modern Rioja benchmark, regularly attracting top scores from leading critics such as Parker, Penín and Tanzer, and this 3-liter bottle was produced only in tiny quantities.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Amancio shows an intense, almost opaque, deep cherry-red hue with a vibrant garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and complex: ripe blackberries, black cherries, cassis and fig are framed by graphite-like minerality, licorice, dark roasted coffee and subtle cocoa, all wrapped in the fine toast and spice of high-quality French oak. On the palate, this is a full, powerful yet remarkably refined Rioja, with a silky, velvety texture that speaks to meticulous tannin management. Concentrated dark fruit—black cherry, blackberry, plum and blackcurrant—unfolds slowly, intertwined with notes of smoke, sweet spice, dark chocolate and a touch of balsamic and mineral tension. The oak is beautifully integrated, lending structure without overshadowing the fruit. Acidity is fresh and vibrant, keeping the wine lifted, while the ripe, polished tannins provide grip and great length. The finish is very long, echoing fruit, spice, smoke and a subtle saline-mineral edge. In a 3-liter Jeroboam, this 2019 vintage has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25+ years, gaining more tertiary complexity—leather, tobacco, truffle and dried flowers—while retaining its core of fruit.

Production
The Amancio vineyards lie in La Veguilla, within San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta, a zone prized for its elevation, Atlantic influence and limestone-rich soils. Here, the Eguren family farms 16.5 hectares, but Amancio is a strict selection from the four finest parcels, rooted in calcareous clay with small rounded limestone pebbles that enhance drainage and reflect light back to the vines. Yields are kept exceptionally low, prioritizing intensity and purity over volume. The vineyards are organically fertilized and worked according to ecological principles. At harvest, bunches are meticulously handpicked and then destemmed berry by berry, followed by an extraordinarily rigorous selection process so that only the most perfect grapes make it into the cuvée. A cold pre-fermentation maceration of around six days enhances color and aromatics. Fermentation takes place in small 5-hectoliter oak vats, with traditional foot treading performed twice daily during maceration to extract gently yet thoroughly. Malolactic fermentation and aging occur in new French oak barriques of Bordeaux size for about 24 months, followed by a further 6–12 months of bottle aging before release—extended élevage that builds texture, complexity and aging capacity.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Rioja designed for the table, particularly in this generous 3-liter format, ideal for special dinners and celebrations. Pair it with rich, protein-driven dishes: slow-roasted lamb shoulder, suckling pig, aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, oxtail stew, braised short ribs or venison with dark fruit reductions. It also sings alongside mature Manchego, aged sheep’s cheeses, truffled dishes, wild mushroom ragù and hearty bean or chorizo-based stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the freshness and definition of the fruit. For a Jeroboam, plan ahead: open the bottle well in advance and decant for 2–3 hours (longer for maximum expression) to allow the wine to fully unfold its layered aromatics and soften the youthful tannins.

Producer
Sierra Cantabria is the flagship Rioja estate of the Eguren family, one of Spain’s most respected wine dynasties, with several generations devoted to viticulture in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. From their base in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the Egurens have been instrumental in redefining high-end Rioja, combining deep respect for old vines and terroir with meticulous, modern cellar practices. Their top cuvées—among them Amancio—have helped position the region among the world’s premier fine-wine origins, regularly winning high scores and international acclaim. Amancio, in particular, stands as a statement wine for the estate: a micro-selection from their best parcels, crafted to show how Tempranillo from this corner of Rioja Alta can be both powerful and extraordinarily refined.
