Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Relentless is opaque purple-black with a vibrant, inky core and a deep ruby rim. The nose is expressive and layered, offering an immediate rush of blackberry compote, black plum, and blueberry preserve, followed by notes of violets, cracked black pepper, smoked meat, and graphite, with hints of mocha, baking spices, and incense from its time in French oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured wine with a plush, mouth-filling texture. Dense black and blue fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and boysenberry—are framed by espresso, dark chocolate, cured meats, and a touch of licorice. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing substantial grip without harshness, while a fresh line of acidity keeps the richness in check and drives a long, savory finish. The 2019 has the power and structure to age gracefully for 15–20 years, evolving toward more savory, gamey and truffle notes over time.

Production
Relentless is sourced primarily from Shafer’s rugged estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, where steep, rocky hillsides and volcanic-derived soils naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The Syrah and Petite Sirah (a hallmark of this blend) are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted with great care, and fermented in small lots to capture purity and precision. Extended maceration encourages color and tannin integration, followed by aging—often around 30 months—in high-quality French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new. This long élevage polishes the tannins, layers in spice and toast, and helps the wine achieve its signature density and seamless texture.

The 2019 Relentless is a natural match for boldly flavored dishes and slow-cooked, savory preparations. Think grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb shanks, smoked brisket, venison, or rich stews, as well as earthy mushroom ragù, truffle pasta, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its complexity and avoid emphasizing alcohol or oak. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open the aromatics and soften the structure; older bottles may benefit from a shorter, gentle decant to separate sediment while preserving delicate tertiary notes.
