Description
The 2019 Roux-Duval Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot is a finely crafted white Burgundy that captures the tension, depth, and elegance that Chardonnay can achieve in this storied terroir. Drawn from a tiny premier cru parcel yielding only around 600–700 bottles, it offers both rarity and refinement for collectors and lovers of great white Burgundy. This cuvée is the realization of a long-held dream, born from the alliance of two historic grower families devoted to world-class Chardonnay in both Burgundy and Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chassagne-Montrachet shows a luminous straw-yellow hue with subtle green reflections and fine golden highlights, signaling both freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive, with floral tones of acacia and white blossoms lifted by delicate notes of fresh butter and roasted hazelnut. Subtle oak framing adds complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is full-flavored yet beautifully poised, combining ripe notes of honeyed pear and stone fruit with a deep, stony minerality typical of Abbaye de Morgeot. A surprisingly spicy, vibrant acidity runs through the core, giving structure and length, while fine phenolic grip adds tension and a lightly pithy, almost saline finish. This 2019 has the flesh of a ripe vintage but the backbone to age gracefully; it will drink well now with aeration, but has excellent potential to evolve over the next 8–12 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and tertiary complexity with time in bottle.
Production
The Abbaye de Morgeot premier cru lies in one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s most esteemed sectors, where limestone-rich soils with clay and marl provide both power and mineral cut to Chardonnay. Roux-Duval farms this small plot with close attention, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand to ensure pristine fruit selection given the tiny production of only 600–700 bottles. After pressing, the must is fermented and then matured in French oak for about 16 months, with approximately 20% new barrels and the remainder in second and third-use oak. This thoughtful élevage brings texture, creaminess, and gentle spice while preserving the vineyard’s inherent minerality and precision.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot shines alongside refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops with a beurre blanc sauce, roasted turbot, or sole meunière. It also pairs beautifully with poultry in cream-based sauces, veal blanquette, or earthy dishes like morel mushrooms and truffled risotto; aged hard cheeses and creamy cow’s milk cheeses are equally compelling partners. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow both freshness and aromatic complexity to emerge. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the phenolic tension on the finish.
Producer
Domaine Roux-Duval is the union of two historic winegrowing families, Roux and Duval, each long specialized in crafting great Chardonnay in Burgundy and Champagne. The estate’s story began with the friendship between Christian Roux and Jean-Charles Duval and their shared dream of creating an exceptional domaine that would bring together their respective traditions and know-how. That vision was finally realized 25 years later by their sons, Sébastien Roux and Edouard Duval, who now steward the domaine’s small but high-quality holdings. With its meticulous vineyard work, limited-production bottlings, and focus on premier sites such as Chassagne-Montrachet’s Abbaye de Morgeot, Roux-Duval is positioning itself as a noteworthy name among contemporary Burgundy producers, especially for those seeking precision-driven, terroir-focused Chardonnay.
