Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Trasnocho is an intense, almost opaque ruby with a vivid purple rim, signalling both richness and youthful energy. The nose opens with layers of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plum compote, followed by graphite, violets, licorice and cocoa, with well-integrated notes of fine French oak—vanilla pod, sweet spices and a hint of toasted coffee bean. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated yet remarkably polished, with velvety tannins and a core of ripe black fruit framed by fresh acidity from the cool Rioja Alavesa climate. Flavours of black cherry, boysenberry and damson are joined by dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and a subtle balsamic touch, leading into a long, layered finish with mineral tension and refined oak spice. This 2019 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and savoury spice with time in the cellar.

Production
Trasnocho is crafted from old vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, where high altitude, calcareous clay soils and significant diurnal temperature swings produce grapes with exceptional concentration and natural freshness. Fruit is meticulously hand-harvested, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables to ensure only pristine bunches make it into the final blend, which is predominantly Tempranillo with a small proportion of Graciano. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, and Remírez de Ganuza employs its signature “Trasnocho” technique: after the free-run wine is drawn off, an inflatable membrane gently presses the skins overnight, extracting fine phenolics and flavour without excess bitterness. The wine is then aged in predominantly new French oak barrels, allowing it to integrate structure and complexity while preserving the purity of fruit and the mineral signature of Rioja Alavesa.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Rioja pairs brilliantly with roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, ibérico pork, game dishes, and richly sauced stews, as well as mature Manchego, aged sheep’s cheeses and truffle-inflected dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open fully and soften its tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant to remove sediment and gently aerate will be sufficient.
