Description
The 2019 Raúl Pérez Castro Ventosa Valtuille La Vitoriana is a rare, Burgundian‑styled expression of Mencía from one of Bierzo’s most historic estates. Crafted by Spain’s cult winemaker Raúl Pérez, this is only the second vintage of this single‑site top cuvée, and just 620 bottles were produced. The wine marries old‑vine intensity with an unusually elegant frame, earning a remarkable 97/100 points from Robert Parker and confirming its status as one of Bierzo’s benchmark reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Vitoriana shows a bright, translucent ruby to garnet hue, more reminiscent of fine Pinot Noir than a typical Spanish red. The nose is deeply refined yet vibrant, with lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate layered over violet, rose petal, subtle wild herbs, graphite and a delicate hint of finely integrated oak spice.
On the palate, this Mencía is medium‑bodied and supremely poised, with a silken texture and beautifully delineated red fruit. Precise notes of crunchy cherry, cranberry and red currant mingle with savory undertones of crushed stones, dried flowers, and a whisper of sweet spice from its large‑format oak aging. The fine, chalky tannins are a hallmark of the site, giving structure without weight, while the fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and elongated on the finish. At 13.4% alcohol, it feels effortlessly balanced and harmonious. Already impressive in its youth, it has the stuffing and structure to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity and greater aromatic nuance with time in bottle.
Production
La Vitoriana comes from extremely old, low‑yielding Mencía vines rooted in the poor, sandy and clay‑influenced soils around Valtuille in Bierzo, a region benefiting from a gentle Atlantic‑influenced microclimate with milder temperatures than the surrounding areas of León and Galicia. These old vines ripen quickly and offer only small quantities of intensely flavored fruit, so picking must be carefully timed at optimal maturity. In 2019, the Mencía from La Vitoriana was fermented in a single 1,000‑liter oak vat, allowing for a slow, oxygen‑rich fermentation that preserves finesse and aromatic detail. The wine was then aged in a 500‑liter oak barrel, a large format that ensures a more subtle wood influence and a better ratio of wine to oak than in the inaugural vintage, resulting in greater elegance, freshness and harmony. The focus throughout is on expressing the essence of the site and the variety, rather than power or extraction.
Food & Serving
This refined Bierzo red is wonderfully versatile at the table and shines with dishes that echo its Burgundian elegance rather than sheer richness. Pair it with roast duck breast, herb‑crusted lamb, grilled pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto or game birds such as quail or partridge. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, semi‑hard cheeses and dishes featuring wild herbs or earthy root vegetables. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and mineral detail; in warmer rooms, aim for the cooler end of that range. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing greater floral complexity and smoothing the fine, chalky tannins.
Producer
Castro Ventosa is one of the oldest documented wine estates in Bierzo, with records of vineyard purchases dating back to 1752. Located in Valtuille de Abajo at the foot of an ancient Roman hill settlement (the “Castro” that gives the estate its name), the bodega is partially carved into the hillside and surrounded by some 60 hectares of Mencía vines, many between 30 and 60 years old. For much of its history, the family’s grapes were sold to local cooperatives; only in the early 1990s did they begin bottling their own wines. Under the guidance of star oenologist Raúl Pérez and the younger generation of the Pérez family, Castro Ventosa has become a driving force in the revaluation of Mencía and the Bierzo appellation. Together with estates like Descendientes de J. Palacios, they championed low yields, precision in the vineyard and a focus on terroir, helping Mencía shed its rustic image and attain cult status among enthusiasts. Today, their site‑specific wines under the Valtuille label are considered among the most important references for modern Bierzo, frequently earning top scores and international acclaim.
