Description

The 2019 Promontory Magnum is a commanding expression of Napa Valley, presented in the most celebratory format: a 1.5L bottle designed for long aging and memorable occasions. Sourced from a dramatic, rugged corner of the Harlan family’s hillside holdings, this wine captures the wild, untamed side of Napa with remarkable precision and composure. In magnum, its depth, complexity, and aging trajectory are amplified, making it a standout centerpiece for any serious cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Promontory shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a vibrant, youthful rim—an immediate sign of both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and evolving, with dark blackberry and cassis at the core, supported by graphite, fresh tobacco leaf, crushed rock, and hints of cedar, bay laurel, and warm spice. There’s a distinct mineral edge—almost ferrous or stony—that underscores its hillside origins. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet finely tuned, with dense black and blue fruits wrapped in a framework of firm, ultra-fine tannins. Notes of blackcurrant, wild plum, and black cherry interplay with cocoa nib, cigar box, and a cool, savory tone reminiscent of wet stone and dried herbs. The acidity is vibrant, carrying the wine with precision through a long, resonant finish. In magnum, the 2019 has exceptional aging potential—easily 20–30 years or more under proper cellaring—gradually unfolding into greater aromatic complexity, polish, and secondary nuances over time.

Production
Promontory is drawn from a remote, steep, and geologically complex site tucked between the Harlan Estate and Bond vineyards in the western hills of Napa Valley. The terroir is marked by fractured rock, varied ancient soils, and cooler exposures, giving naturally low yields and grapes of great intensity and structure. The fruit is harvested by hand in small lots, with meticulous selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest clusters are used. Vinification typically involves a combination of stainless steel and/or oak fermentation vessels, with gentle extraction to retain purity and tension rather than overt richness. The wine is then aged for an extended period in carefully chosen oak (often large-format and a mix of new and seasoned barrels) and in bottle before release, allowing its structure, minerality, and finesse to knit together harmoniously.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Promontory Magnum is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano, which echo its umami depth. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for early drinking, and even longer if you prefer a more open, aromatic profile. In magnum, the wine will reward those who can give it both air in the glass and years in the cellar.

Producer
Promontory is one of the most prestigious projects of the Harlan family, renowned for shaping the modern image of luxury wine in Napa Valley. Conceived after Bill Harlan discovered this rugged, isolated hillside site decades ago, Promontory was developed as a separate estate to showcase a distinctly more primal, mineral-driven expression of Napa Cabernet. While rooted in the same western hills that made Harlan Estate famous, Promontory stands apart for its singular terroir and its emphasis on structure, longevity, and a cool, almost Old World sensibility. Since its emergence, Promontory has quickly earned a place among Napa’s most sought-after, cellar-worthy wines, recognized by collectors and critics alike for its depth, refinement, and remarkable aging capacity.
