Description

The 2019 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Vigna I Poggi is a single-vineyard Brunello that captures the wild beauty and precision of the Montalcino hills. From a mere 2.5-hectare plot perched high above the town, this wine showcases Sangiovese at its most refined, shaped by altitude, stone-rich soils and meticulous craftsmanship. Produced in very limited quantities, it offers a deeply authentic and highly focused expression of Poggio Antico’s terroir-driven style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vigna I Poggi 2019 shows a luminous, deep garnet core with bright ruby highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately complex and pure, with aromas of wild cherry, blood orange zest and dried rose petals layered over notes of tobacco leaf, sweet spice, thyme, cedar and a distinct mineral edge reminiscent of warm stones and terracotta. On the palate, this is a precise, vertical style of Brunello: medium to full-bodied with a firm backbone of finely etched tannins and vibrant acidity. Red and black cherry, pomegranate and cranberry fruit are interwoven with savory nuances of leather, dried herbs, black tea, licorice and a subtle saline note that speaks to the high-altitude Galestro soils. The oak is beautifully integrated, adding gentle hints of vanilla pod and toasted spice without ever dominating the Sangiovese character. The finish is long, tense and elegant, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable with sufficient aeration now, it will reward patience and should evolve gracefully over 15–20+ years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkiness with time in bottle.

Production
Vigna I Poggi is a single parcel planted in 2005 at 550–570 meters above sea level on the south-western slopes of Montalcino, one of the highest and coolest sites in the appellation. The vineyard’s soils are a mosaic of five distinct units, dominated by classic Tuscan Galestro with more than 35% gravel content, rich in limestone yet well-draining and only moderately fertile—ideal conditions for Sangiovese to yield low, concentrated crops. Farming is fully organic, with natural fertilizers, thoughtful green cover management and selective green manuring to maintain soil vitality and a healthy vineyard ecosystem. Grapes from Vigna I Poggi are harvested by hand on separate days to capture optimal ripeness, then vinified independently in 60 hl tulip-shaped concrete tanks. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occur alongside a gentle maceration at temperatures kept below 25°C, ensuring a fine, elegant extraction of phenolics. After a careful pressing that separates the pure “free-run” wine from the press fraction, the wine is matured for 30 months in large 25 hl Austrian oak casks, followed by a further 6 months in concrete before bottling, preserving both purity of fruit and a strong sense of place.

Food & Serving
This is a Brunello that shines at the table with refined, flavor-driven dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, bistecca alla fiorentina, roast pigeon or duck, truffled pappardelle, aged pecorino Toscano and mushroom-based dishes such as porcini risotto or wild mushroom ragù. Its structure and freshness also make it an excellent partner for game and earthy autumnal cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold. For current drinking, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and release the wine’s layered nose; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant just to remove sediment.

Producer
Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino’s most respected estates, known for its elevated vineyards, meticulous viticulture and a style that marries classic Brunello structure with clarity and finesse. Located on some of the highest hills of the appellation, the estate has long championed precise, terroir-driven expressions of Sangiovese, and Vigna I Poggi represents the pinnacle of this philosophy as a dedicated single-vineyard bottling. Over the years, Poggio Antico has earned a strong international reputation and critical acclaim for the consistency and elegance of its Brunelli, helping to cement Montalcino’s status as one of Italy’s great fine wine regions. Vigna I Poggi, with its strictly limited production, stands as a flagship cuvée that encapsulates the estate’s pursuit of purity, balance and longevity.
