Description
2019 Pierre Graffeuille et Matthieu Dumarcher Odyssée is a bold, cross-regional red that unites the power of Bordeaux with the charm of the Southern Rhône. Created by Pierre Graffeuille, managing director of Château Léoville Las Cases, and Rhône-based winemaker Matthieu Dumarcher, it marries Cabernet Sauvignon from the Médoc with Grenache and Counoise from the South of France. The result is a limited-production, organically grown cuvée that combines structure, elegance and a distinctly Mediterranean personality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Odyssée shows a deep, vibrant garnet-red hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with exotic spice notes—cumin, star anise and cardamom—intertwining with dark, ripe fruits. Expect waves of black plum, warm cassis and blackberry compote, lifted by nuances of dark chocolate, dried lavender and a subtle tapenade-like savoriness.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly woven, with a core of concentrated black and blue fruit framed by firm yet rounded tannins. The Cabernet lends backbone, drive and graphite-edged structure, while the Grenache and Counoise contribute generosity, supple texture and aromatic complexity. Fresh acidity keeps everything in balance, leading into a long, persistent finish with a distinctive peppery kick and a touch of warm spice. With its impressive depth and structure, the 2019 Odyssée has excellent aging potential and can easily develop for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar, gaining further nuance and polish over time.
Production
Odyssée brings together organically farmed Cabernet Sauvignon from the Médoc with Grenache and Counoise grown in the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern Rhône, capturing both Atlantic freshness and Mediterranean warmth. Low yields and careful fruit selection ensure concentration and purity, with a total production that rarely exceeds 8,000 bottles in a good year. The grapes from each origin are harvested at optimal ripeness, vinified separately and then blended to achieve the desired balance of structure and finesse. The wine is aged in French oak, with the wood carefully integrated so as not to overshadow the natural fruit expression of the Rhône varieties, but rather to support the overall harmony and complexity of the final cuvée.
Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic red that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, slow-cooked beef or veal, game birds, or hearty stews with olives and Mediterranean spices. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring grilled aubergine, mushrooms, or hard, aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; mature bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to remove any sediment while preserving their evolved aromatics.
Producer
The Odyssée project was launched in 2015 by two respected figures of the French wine world: Pierre Graffeuille, director of the prestigious Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, and Matthieu Dumarcher, an independent winemaker in the Southern Rhône known for his thoughtful, terroir-driven, organically grown wines. Their collaboration is a deliberate "odyssey" between regions, blending the classic, structured style of top Médoc Cabernet with the warmth, generosity and spice of Rhône varieties. Though produced in very small quantities, Odyssée has attracted attention for its originality, purity and age-worthiness, standing as a modern, cross-regional French red that still respects tradition and place.
