Description
The 2019 Petrolo Galatrona Magnum is one of Tuscany’s most coveted Merlots, crafted from a single, meticulously farmed vineyard in the hills of Valdarno. Often mentioned in the same breath as icons like Masseto, La Ricolma and Redigaffi, Galatrona has earned a reputation as the “Pétrus of Italy” thanks to its depth, precision and age‑worthy structure. In this generous 1.5L magnum format, the wine’s elegance, complexity and longevity are further enhanced, making it an outstanding choice for collectors and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Galatrona shows a deep, saturated ruby to almost opaque purple core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with ripe black cherry and dark plum, followed by notes of blackcurrant, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco and warm spices, with earthy undertones, eucalypt, and a subtle hint of white truffle emerging as the wine evolves in the glass.
On the palate, this is a full‑bodied yet remarkably refined Merlot, with a rich, velvety texture wrapped around a spine of fresh, vibrant acidity. Dense black and blue fruits are joined by plum compote, cocoa, licorice and a touch of roasted coffee from the French barriques, all supported by polished, finely grained tannins. The finish is long, layered and persistent, echoing dark fruit, spice and earthy-mineral nuances. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a long decant, but will continue to gain complexity and tertiary notes for 15–20 years or more under proper cellaring.
Production
Galatrona is sourced from a single 10‑hectare Merlot vineyard in Mercatale Valdarno, in the eastern part of Tuscany near Arezzo, at Petrolo’s hillside estate. The terroir is dominated by thick clay-rich soils with good water retention and excellent exposure, ideal for producing concentrated, aromatic Merlot of great structure. Yields are kept extremely low at around 500 grams of grapes per vine, with meticulous manual harvesting to ensure that only the finest, perfectly ripe clusters make it into the wine. After hand selection, the grapes undergo fermentation of around 14 days, followed by a smooth malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for approximately 18 months in new French barriques, where it gains additional texture, aromatic complexity and its subtle, toasty oak signature before bottling in magnum.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet polished Tuscan Merlot is a superb partner to rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, lamb shank, game birds, osso buco, or truffle‑accented risottos and mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. For the magnum format, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended in its youth to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles will need a somewhat shorter, gentler decant, primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.
Producer
Petrolo is a highly regarded estate in eastern Tuscany, located in Mercatale Valdarno near Arezzo, where the Valdarno di Sopra hills have long been recognized for producing characterful, age-worthy wines. Under the guidance of owner Luca Sanjust, Petrolo has become one of Italy’s benchmark producers for Merlot, with Galatrona as its iconic flagship wine. The estate’s philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a strong expression of site, resulting in a style that marries Tuscan freshness and structure with the opulence and depth of great Merlot. Over the years, Petrolo and Galatrona have received consistently high acclaim from international critics and have secured a place among the top references not only in Tuscany, but in the wider world of fine Italian wine.
