Description

Penfolds Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a rare, single‑region expression from one of Australia’s most revered producers. Crafted exclusively from low‑yielding Cabernet vines on Coonawarra’s famed terra rossa soils, it offers a modern, polished counterpoint to the house’s legendary Bin 707. Produced only in exceptional years—1973, 2008, 2018 and now 2019—this is a collectable Cabernet that captures both Penfolds’ heritage and Coonawarra’s cool‑climate finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Bin 169 shows a deep, opaque crimson core with a vivid purple rim, signalling concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive and pure: ripe blackcurrant and cassis at the fore, layered with notes of dark plum, blackberry, and mulberry. Subtle yet classy French oak frames the fruit, adding hints of vanilla pod, cedar shavings, cigar tobacco, baking spice and a touch of graphite and dried herbs. On the palate, this is full‑bodied yet beautifully proportioned, with a velvety, almost plush texture wrapped around a firm, finely structured tannin core. Flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry and boysenberry are interwoven with cocoa, cedar, clove, pencil shavings and a savoury, leafy Cabernet lift. The acidity is fresh and precise, driving a long, persistent finish that underscores the wine’s strong varietal identity. While already impressive in its youth, Bin 169 2019 is built for the long haul and will reward careful cellaring for 15–20 years or more, gradually gaining complexity, tertiary notes and further integration of oak and tannin.

Production
Bin 169 is sourced from some of Penfolds’ finest, low‑yielding Cabernet Sauvignon blocks in Coonawarra, renowned for its cool climate and distinctive terra rossa soils—iron‑rich red topsoil over limestone that produces wines of purity, structure and longevity. The fruit is hand‑selected from older vines to maximise concentration and varietal character, harvested at optimal ripeness to balance richness with freshness. In the winery, traditional Penfolds techniques meet meticulous modern winemaking: the must is fermented in temperature‑controlled vessels to preserve aromatics and fine‑tune tannin extraction, before the wine is matured in 100% French oak, a mix of new and seasoned barrels. This careful élevage lends structure, aromatic complexity and polish without overshadowing the clarity of Coonawarra Cabernet.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Cabernet is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes: think dry‑aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison, or slow‑braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with truffle‑infused dishes, mushroom ragù, hard aged cheeses such as Comté or mature Cheddar, and herb‑led, Mediterranean‑inspired cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic detail and structural balance. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the layers of cassis, cedar and spice to unfold; older bottles (10+ years) may need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold on Magill Estate in South Australia, Penfolds is one of Australia’s oldest and most influential wine producers. What began as a small venture inspired by the supposed medicinal benefits of wine evolved into a global benchmark estate, thanks in large part to the visionary winemaker Max Schubert, creator of the iconic Grange and the house’s celebrated Bin series. Today, under the stewardship of chief winemaker Peter Gago—‘Guardian of the Grange’—Penfolds continues to set the standard for Australian fine wine, consistently earning top international accolades, including recognition as the “Most Admired Wine Brand” by Drinks International. Bin 169 sits within this elite portfolio as a modern, Coonawarra‑focused Cabernet, showcasing the estate’s deep roots in South Australia and its mastery of ageworthy, world‑class reds.
