Description
The 2019 Paul Clüver Clüver Prieur Colline du Matin Chardonnay is a finely tuned South African white from the cool-climate Elgin Valley, prized for its elegance, precision, and restrained richness. Paul Clüver is known for crafting wines that reflect the freshness of the Cape’s most distinctive growing areas, and this Chardonnay shows that style beautifully.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, it typically shows a bright, polished appearance that hints at freshness and poise. The nose is lifted and refined, with citrus, white stone fruit, subtle orchard notes, and delicate oak-derived nuances that add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is usually crisp and focused, with lively acidity supporting flavours of lemon, ripe pear, green apple, and a gentle creamy texture. The finish is long and composed, with enough structure to suggest good short- to medium-term ageing potential.
Production
Sourced from the cool Elgin region, the wine benefits from high-altitude vineyards and a climate that naturally preserves acidity and aromatic detail. The terroir of Elgin, with its cooler temperatures and longer ripening period, is ideal for Chardonnay of finesse. Harvesting is typically done with care to capture freshness at optimal ripeness, followed by vinification designed to balance purity of fruit with texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, grilled salmon, creamy pasta dishes, seared scallops, and mushroom-based recipes. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting only if you wish to open up its aromatics after bottling.
Producer
Paul Clüver Family Wines is one of South Africa’s best-known cool-climate producers, based in Elgin and respected for its expressive wines and strong regional identity. The estate has played an important role in establishing Elgin as a premier source for refined Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, earning recognition for both quality and consistency.
