Description

Bottled in an ultra-rare 3-liter Jeroboam, the 2019 Paganos La Nieta is one of Rioja Alavesa’s most coveted reds, crafted for collectors and serious Tempranillo lovers. This flagship wine from the Eguren family marries raw power with remarkable finesse, expressing a single, tiny 1.75-hectare vineyard in Páganos at 525 meters altitude. With only around 5,000 bottles produced in total – and just a handful in this impressive large format – it stands firmly among the elite wines of Spain.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Nieta shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a vivid, almost inky intensity, hinting at concentration and youth. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy: ripe blackberries, wild blueberries and dark cherries interwoven with violets, graphite, damp stone and subtle notes of cocoa, sweet spice and fine cedar from its new French oak upbringing. On the palate, this is powerful yet impeccably poised. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a core of dark, pure Tempranillo fruit wrapped in a pronounced mineral backbone from the limestone-rich soils. The tannins are firm but ultra-fine, giving structure without harshness, while fresh, balanced acidity keeps everything lifted and precise. Flavors of black fruit, licorice, crushed rock and gently toasted oak carry into a long, focused finish. In this 3-liter format, the aging curve is slower and more graceful; while already impressive with air, it has excellent cellaring potential for 15–25 years, likely longer, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
La Nieta comes from a single 1.75-hectare vineyard planted in 1975 in Páganos (Laguardia), in the cool, elevated zone of Rioja Alavesa at around 525 meters above sea level. The terroir is dominated by very calcareous clay soils over limestone, lending the wine its marked minerality and tension. Meticulous, low-yield viticulture and hand harvesting ensure only the finest Tempranillo grapes are selected. Fermentation takes place in four small 1,000-liter oak vats, allowing for precise parcel-by-parcel control and gentle extraction. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 16 months in new French oak barriques, where it gains polish, aromatic complexity and structure without losing the clarity of its vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, grilled or roasted lamb, venison and other game, or slow-braised beef cheeks and oxtail. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and mature hard cheeses such as Manchego curado or aged Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its elegance and aromatic complexity. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for current drinking, and even longer if enjoyed in its first decade—to allow the wine to unfurl fully in the glass.

Producer
Viñedos de Páganos is one of the most exclusive estates of the Hermanos Eguren, a family with deep roots in Spanish wine dating back to 1870. From their base in Rioja, the Egurens have created some of Spain’s most acclaimed labels, including Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente and the famed Numanthia-Termes (later sold to LVMH). La Nieta, meaning “the granddaughter,” was conceived as a personal and symbolic project, launched to mark the birth of a grandchild and crafted as the family’s absolute top wine and flagship expression of Rioja Alavesa. With its tiny production, meticulous vineyard work and consistently high critical acclaim—often singled out as a “star” of the region—La Nieta has helped cement both Viñedos de Páganos and the Eguren family as reference points for modern, world-class Spanish reds.
