Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2019 Orma reveals a deep, opaque ruby core with purple reflections along the rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose opens generously with layers of ripe blackberry and black cherry, moving into notes of candied red cherries, warm baking spices, white pepper and a subtle hint of red chili flakes, all wrapped in fine cedar and a touch of graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably supple, offering a rounded, velvety mouthfeel. Flavors of sour cherry, black plum and blackberry compote mingle with cocoa, sweet tobacco, licorice and a gentle savory note. The tannins are still firm and youthful, providing a clear backbone and impressive length without feeling harsh, while balanced acidity keeps the wine fresh and lifted. This is a wine built for the long haul: give it 2–3 years in bottle to further integrate, and expect it to evolve beautifully for decades, gaining complexity and finesse over time.

Production
Podere Orma’s vineyards lie in Castagneto Carducci, in the Bolgheri area of coastal Tuscany, on deep gravel and clay soils interspersed with a little sand—ideal for Bordeaux varieties in a warm Mediterranean climate. The vines face southwest toward the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, whose cooling breezes moderate daytime heat and ensure mild winters, helping grapes ripen slowly and evenly while retaining aromatic freshness. The 2019 Orma is a meticulously assembled blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve each variety’s character. After fermentation, the wine is matured in oak (typically French barriques) to refine its tannins, build texture and add subtle spice, before blending and further bottle aging to achieve its trademark balance of power and elegance.

Food & Serving
2019 Orma is an outstanding partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised short ribs, slow-cooked lamb shank or Tuscan wild boar ragù over pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses (Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano), truffle-infused dishes and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the wine’s structure and aromatic complexity. Decanting is strongly recommended in its youth: give it 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the layered fruit, spice and mineral notes to fully open up.

Podere Orma is the Bolgheri estate of visionary entrepreneur and wine producer Antonio Moretti, already renowned for his acclaimed Tenuta Sette Ponti in Chianti near Arezzo. Drawn to the exceptional terroir of Castagneto Carducci, Moretti established Podere Orma with the explicit aim of crafting a benchmark Bolgheri red—hence the name “Orma,” meaning “footprint,” a nod to leaving a distinct and enduring mark. Despite its relatively small production, the estate has rapidly risen to a leading position among Bolgheri’s roughly 50 wineries, thanks to its meticulous viticulture and uncompromising quality philosophy.
