Description
2019 Morlet Family Vineyards Passionnément Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, ultra-premium Napa Valley red that marries Old World finesse with New World intensity. Sourced from some of the finest sites in Oakville Bench, St. Helena, and the foothills of Knights Valley, it represents the very best barrels of the vintage from Morlet’s estate vineyards. Dedicated to Luc Morlet’s wife, Jodie, Passionnément is crafted as a ‘ne plus ultra’ cuvée designed to age gracefully for 30+ years, a fact underscored by Robert Parker’s praise for its concentration, structure, and multidimensional finish. What sets this wine apart is its rare combination of opulence and precision: low-yielding vines, meticulous vineyard management, and low-intervention winemaking yield a Cabernet of remarkable depth, purity, and polish. The blend is a tribute not only to Luc and Jodie’s Franco-Californian story, but also to Napa Valley’s rise as one of the world’s elite terroirs for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Passionnément Cabernet Sauvignon is an intense, opaque dark purple, almost inky at the core with a vibrant, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is deeply layered and complex, opening with ripe red, black, and blue berries—think blackcurrant, blueberry, and blackberry compote—interwoven with notes of crème de cassis, dark plum, cedar wood, and a subtle cigar box nuance. With air, hints of graphite, baking spices, and a touch of cocoa and dried violets emerge, adding further dimension.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated yet remarkably refined, echoing the aromatic spectrum with rich cassis, black plum, and dark cherry wrapped in a creamy, velvety texture. The tannins are abundant but exquisitely ripe and polished, providing structure without austerity. Layers of cedar, tobacco leaf, and fine oak spice unfold across the mid-palate, leading into a very long, smooth, and complex finish that lingers with dark fruit, savory notes, and a hint of mineral lift. Built for the long haul, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: while already impressive in its youth with proper aeration, it will evolve beautifully over 15–30+ years, gaining further nuance, tertiary complexity, and silkiness with time in the cellar.
Production
Passionnément is a blend of Morlet’s top Cabernet parcels across prime Napa and Sonoma sites, capturing the essence of Oakville Bench, St. Helena, and the foothills of Knights Valley. Oakville’s warm days, cool nights, and complex mix of clay, loam, and sandy soils bring power, structure, and depth, while the slightly cooler, elevated sites add freshness, elegance, and aromatic lift. The Morlet team focuses on low yields and exacting vineyard practices: meticulous canopy management, careful green harvesting, and hand-picking at optimal physiological ripeness to preserve both intensity and balance. In the cellar, Luc Morlet applies traditional, low-intervention winemaking inspired by his Old World roots—small-lot fermentations, gentle extraction, and extended élevage in high-quality French oak barrels—selecting only the very best barrels each year to create this flagship cuvée that unites richness, precision, and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This commanding yet polished Cabernet Sauvignon shines alongside richly flavored, protein-driven dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragout, hard aged cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda, and dark chocolate with a high cocoa content for a decadent finish. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decant generously—at least 1–2 hours when young—to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layers; older bottles (10+ years) may benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant to separate sediment while preserving mature aromas.
Producer
Morlet Family Vineyards, based in picturesque St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley, is the creation of Luc and Jodie Morlet, who have built a reputation for crafting highly expressive, vineyard-driven wines that bridge Old World tradition and Californian vibrancy. Luc, a French-born winemaker with deep experience in both Bordeaux and Burgundy, brings classical sensibilities—low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and artisanal, low-intervention cellar practices—to some of California’s most coveted terroirs. The estate’s focus on small production, site transparency, and rigorous barrel selection has earned Morlet critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors, placing the winery among the standout names in Napa and Sonoma’s ultra-premium segment. Passionnément, as a flagship Cabernet cuvée, embodies the Morlets’ pursuit of excellence and their belief in Napa Valley’s capacity to produce world-class, age-worthy wines on par with the greatest Cabernet-based wines of the world.
