Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cerequio shows a luminous ruby red hue with garnet reflections forming at the rim, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose is complex and finely detailed, offering layers of ripe red berries, plum and cherry, interwoven with notes of mint, eucalyptus, wild herbs and dried flowers. Underneath the fruit lie mineral accents of crushed stone and a subtle ferrous, iron-like character often described as rusted nail—hallmarks of great Barolo from limestone-rich soils. On the palate, this Barolo is precise and structured yet supremely elegant. The attack brings ripe, concentrated red fruit wrapped in a taut lattice of ultra-fine tannins, delivering both power and grace. Herbal and balsamic notes add lift, while the stony minerality provides a firm backbone and a long, harmonious finish. The 2019 vintage shows an open, approachable bouquet even in its youth, but the wine’s balance, acidity and tannic structure promise a remarkable aging potential of 15–25 years or more in a proper cellar, gradually developing greater complexity, truffle nuances and savory depth.

Production
Cerequio is a famed amphitheater-like cru in La Morra, and Michele Chiarlo’s parcel covers 2.5 hectares on south to south-west–facing slopes at around 320 meters above sea level. The soils are calcareous marl of sedimentary marine origin from the Tortonian era (around 9 million years old), characterized by alkaline pH, low organic matter and high concentrations of microelements such as magnesium and manganese—conditions that naturally limit vigor and enhance aromatics, finesse and minerality. Harvest is carried out exclusively by hand to ensure meticulous bunch selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, traditional Barolo vinification is employed: careful destemming, long maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins, and aging in oak (typically large casks and/or well-judged barrels) to polish structure without overwhelming the cru’s delicate nuances, resulting in a wine of clarity, terroir expression and longevity.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Classic pairings include eggs topped with white Alba truffle, roasted or baked lamb, veal braised slowly in Barolo and aged Piedmontese cheeses such as Castelmagno. It also works beautifully with game birds, porcini or truffle risotto, and dishes featuring earthy root vegetables and mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly, mainly to remove sediment.
