Description
The 2019 Markus Molitor Riesling Auslese Weiße Kapsel Box is a collector’s dream: six grand cru single-vineyard Auslesen in one carefully curated set from one of Mosel’s most talented winemakers. Each bottle is a dry, White Capsule Riesling from a top site, showcasing the incredible range of Mosel terroir in a benchmark vintage. This limited selection underlines Markus Molitor’s reputation for precision, purity and longevity, drawing on an eighth‑generation family heritage in one of the world’s great Riesling regions.
Tasting Notes
Across the six cuvées, the appearance is consistently bright and luminous, ranging from pale straw to light golden hues that hint at concentration without heaviness. In the glass, they are crystal clear and youthful, forming elegant beads when swirled, a visual cue to their freshness and vitality.
The noses are profoundly complex yet beautifully defined, each wine expressing its vineyard: Wehlener and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr bring deep, exotic stone and tropical fruits (mango, golden passion fruit), wrapped in fine slate and iodine notes; Erdener Treppchen layers ripe tropical fruit with red slate, citrus oil and a subtle, almost smoky, flinty edge; Kinheimer Rosenberg and Graacher Domprobst lean into cooler, flintier aromatics with jod-like minerality and concentrated citrus and orchard fruit; Brauneberger Juffer‑Sonnenuhr shows floral honey, blossoms and delicate, brown-slate smokiness over perfectly ripe fruit. On the palate, all six wines share Molitor’s signature: rich and intense in flavor yet supremely precise, filigreed and crystalline in structure. Expect generous, fully ripe fruit—tropical stone fruits, citrus, and hints of apricot and quince—balanced by piercing, saline acidity and a taut mineral backbone. Texturally, they move from silky and playful (Sonnenuhr sites) to more powerful, tactile and structured (Treppchen, Rosenberg, Domprobst), often with a subtle phenolic or fine-tannin grip that lengthens the finish. Despite their concentration, they remain weightless, carried by remarkable freshness. These 2019 Auslesen have outstanding aging potential: most will benefit from at least 5–10 years in bottle, and the top three-star cuvées from Sonnenuhr and Treppchen are built to evolve gracefully over two to three decades, gaining layers of honey, spice and petrol-tinged complexity without losing their spine of acidity.
Production
All six wines come from steep, terraced grand cru and top-class vineyards along the Mosel—Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Erdener Treppchen, Kinheimer Rosenberg, Brauneberger Juffer‑Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst—where vines cling to dramatically sloped slate hillsides above the river. These sites combine heat-retaining blue, grey, brown and red slate soils with optimal sun exposure and cool nights, giving low yields of intensely flavored Riesling. 2019 was marked by a warm, dry growing season, mitigated by well-timed summer rains and deep-rooted old vines, resulting in perfectly ripe, aromatically expressive grapes with superb acidity. Harvest at Markus Molitor is done exclusively by hand over multiple, selective passes through the vineyards, allowing the team to pick each parcel at precisely the right ripeness for the Auslese predicate, while largely avoiding botrytis for the White Capsule style. In the cellar, Molitor works traditionally and patiently: gentle pressing, slow, cool fermentations (often with natural yeasts), long lees contact and élevage in large, neutral oak fuders and, in some cases like Erdener Treppchen, in Stockinger casks. The aim is crystal-clear terroir expression and refined structure, resulting in dry Auslesen of remarkable purity, depth and balance.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Auslese Weiße Kapsel collection is versatile at the table, particularly with refined cuisine. The brighter, more filigreed Sonnenuhr bottlings pair beautifully with delicately prepared seafood—think sashimi, scallops, langoustine, grilled turbot or sole—as well as ceviche and citrus-accented dishes. The more powerful, structured wines from Erdener Treppchen, Kinheimer Rosenberg and Graacher Domprobst shine with richer fare such as lobster, beurre blanc, roasted poultry, veal, pork belly, creamy risottos and fine mushroom dishes, as well as mildly spicy Asian cuisine where sweetness is low but aromatic intensity is high. Serve these Rieslings at 8–10 °C for aperitif or lighter dishes, and around 10–12 °C for more concentrated cuvées and heartier food, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass. Decanting young bottles (especially the three-star Auslesen) for 30–60 minutes can help them open aromatically and soften their youthful edge, though they can also be enjoyed slowly over an evening as they unfold in the glass.
Producer
Weingut Markus Molitor is based in the heart of the Mosel and represents the eighth generation of the Molitor family’s winegrowing history, which dates back to the 18th century. When Markus Molitor took over the estate in 1984 at just 20 years old, he set out to restore the Mosel’s reputation for world‑class Riesling by working some of the region’s steepest, most historic vineyards with uncompromising precision. Today, the domaine farms an exceptional spread of grand cru and top sites along the Middle Mosel between Traben‑Trarbach and Bernkastel, including parcels in Thörnicher Ritsch and the Saar. Molitor’s color‑coded capsule system—white for dry, green for off‑dry, gold for sweeter styles—has become a hallmark of clarity and intent in German wine. Highly rated by international critics, with numerous Auslesen and higher predicates regularly scoring in the high‑90s, the estate is regarded as one of Germany’s leading Riesling producers and a modern benchmark for terroir‑driven Mosel wines.
