Description
The 2019 Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana BIO is a single-cru Barolo crafted entirely from Nebbiolo, grown on 50-year-old vines in the historic Baudana vineyard at 350 meters above sea level. This certified organic wine captures the power and depth of Serralunga d’Alba while remaining incredibly precise and refined. Sourced from one of the smallest boutique estates in Barolo and vinified by the acclaimed G.D. Vajra winery, it offers a rare combination of artisanal scale and world-class craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Baudana Barolo shows a classic, luminous garnet with brick-tinged edges, hinting at both its youth and its long life ahead. The nose opens with ripe cherries and dark plums, gradually revealing layers of spice, graphite, and a subtle eucalyptus lift, alongside delicate floral and earthy undertones typical of top Nebbiolo from Serralunga.
On the palate, this is a structured yet finely detailed Barolo. Firm, noble tannins frame flavours of red cherry, blood orange, and black plum, with savoury notes of licorice, crushed stone, and dried herbs. The vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and linear, giving great drive and length to the finish. Still youthful in 2019, it will reward patience: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, silkier texture, and more tertiary notes of leather, truffle and forest floor with proper cellaring.
Production
The Baudana cru sits in Serralunga d’Alba, in the Langhe hills of Piemonte, on blue clay soils that are exceptionally good at retaining water—crucial in hot vintages to ensure even ripening and full phenolic and sugar development. The vines, around 50 years old, are farmed organically, with a clear focus on low yields and optimal fruit quality rather than volume. Grapes are harvested by hand at ideal ripeness, then fermented primarily in large Slavonian oak casks, with a small portion vinified in stainless steel to preserve purity and lift in the fruit profile. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in large Slavonian oak and is then aged there for approximately 32 months, a traditional and gentle élevage that allows the Nebbiolo to develop structure, perfume, and complexity without being dominated by oak.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef or veal, slow-cooked lamb shank, game birds, and classic Piemontese dishes like brasato al Barolo or tajarin with truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Comté), wild mushroom risotto, and dishes featuring porcini or truffle. Serve at 16–18°C; for optimal expression, decant 1–2 hours before serving in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics. Older bottles can be decanted more gently, or simply opened ahead of time and allowed to breathe in the glass.
Producer
Luigi Baudana is one of the smallest and most characterful estates in Serralunga d’Alba, with just 2.6 hectares of vines in some of the village’s finest crus, including the Baudana vineyard itself. Luigi and Fiorina Baudana have been tending vines here for over 30 years and are regarded as local legends, known for their deep knowledge of the land and uncompromising commitment to quality. In 2009, the highly respected G.D. Vajra estate took over responsibility for vinifying the Baudana fruit, ensuring that the family’s legacy would be preserved and amplified. Today, Luigi Baudana stands as a quintessential “garage” producer in the Barolo landscape, combining tiny scale, top sites, organic farming, and the technical excellence of G.D. Vajra to produce some of the most distinctive and sought-after wines of Serralunga.
