2019 Liber Pater Denarius Graves is the rare chance to experience Bordeaux as it might have tasted 150 years ago—without spending a small fortune on a bottle of Liber Pater itself. Crafted by the famously uncompromising Loïc Pasquet, this cuvée is his “accessible” label, though in reality it still sits ahead of many 1855 First Growths in both ambition and rarity. Denarius is made from extremely old, ungrafted vines and farmed with 19th‑century techniques, capturing a historic, pre‑phylloxera expression of Graves in a modern collectible wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Denarius shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple rim, suggesting both concentration and energy. The nose is immediately refined and complex, opening with pure red and dark berry aromatics—raspberries, blackberries and blackcurrants—layered with dark chocolate shavings, subtle violet, graphite and a gentle earthiness that nods to its Graves origins. On the palate the wine is full-bodied yet strikingly elegant, with a velvety, almost cashmere-like texture. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bring structure, freshness and a fine, elongated tannin profile, while Merlot adds plush, ripe fruit to the mid-palate. Flavors of ripe raspberry, blackberry compote, black cherry and dark cocoa are supported by a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine juicy and lifted, never heavy. The finish is long, silky and persistent, showing notes of dark chocolate, mineral nuance and a refined, savory spine. Although already charming in its youth, this 2019 is built for the long haul; from 2021 onward it will unfold beautifully over several decades, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of tobacco, truffle and dried flowers.

Production
Denarius comes from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Graves, where Liber Pater works with extremely old, original rootstocks to recreate the historic taste of Bordeaux. Loïc Pasquet farms his vineyards as they were managed in the mid‑19th century: mixed crops in and around the vines, training by hand, soil plowing with a mule, organic treatments only and exceptionally high planting densities of around 20,000 vines per hectare. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with ruthless selection of bunches to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the final blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Vinification is deliberately traditional and low-intervention, with very small production—only around 250 cases are made in the very best vintages—allowing the character of the old vines, the terroir and the vintage to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Bordeaux that shines alongside refined dishes. Pair it with roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, pigeon or duck breast, classic beef dishes, or mushroom-based cuisine that highlights earthy, savory notes. It will also work beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to let the aromatics fully express themselves. For young bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins, open up the bouquet and reveal the wine’s full depth and elegance.

Based in Graves, Pasquet has built his reputation on an almost obsessive quest to resurrect the true, pre‑phylloxera taste of Bordeaux, working with original grape varieties and ungrafted vines, and reviving forgotten vineyard practices from the mid‑19th century. Liber Pater releases are famously scarce and among the most expensive wines in the world, making Denarius his more “approachable” homage to that same philosophy. Within the region, Liber Pater is regarded as one of the most radical and historically minded estates, and its micro‑production bottlings are highly coveted by collectors, historians of wine and serious Bordeaux enthusiasts alike.
