Description
The 2019 La Pousse d'Or Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most revered terroirs. Crafted from old-vine Pinot Noir and farmed biodynamically, it captures the rare combination of power, finesse, and aromatic complexity that Clos de la Roche is famous for. This is a collector’s wine with the structure for long aging and the elegance to enchant even in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and classical Burgundy refinement. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with black cherry and wild raspberry, followed by notes of violet, peony, and rose petals. With air, more complex nuances unfold: crushed stone, forest floor, black tea, subtle game, and fine cedar and spice from its time in oak.
On the palate, the wine is precise and intense, yet beautifully poised. Dark red and black fruits—morello cherry, blackcurrant, and ripe cranberry—are framed by a firm but ultra-fine tannic structure and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. There is a palpable sense of minerality, giving a cool, stony backbone and great length. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of sweet spice, savoury herbs, and graphite. Built for the long haul, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it will begin to drink well from around 2026, but will continue to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Clos de la Roche is one of the crown jewels of the Côte de Nuits, a Grand Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis characterized by thin, limestone-rich soils over a rocky subsoil, which naturally limit yields and concentrate the fruit. At Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, the vines are cultivated under biodynamic principles, with meticulous work in the vineyards to respect biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystem. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir grapes are used. Vinification is slow and gentle, favouring natural fermentations and a careful, controlled extraction to preserve finesse and terroir transparency. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for around 18 months, including approximately 12 months in French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, adding subtle structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves equally refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, rack of lamb, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, or classic Burgundian preparations like coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon made with a lighter touch. It also works wonderfully with game birds, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. For younger bottles, decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles should be handled gently and, if decanted, only briefly to preserve their delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or is one of Burgundy’s historic and most respected estates, with roots that trace back several centuries. Today, under the leadership of Benoît, who succeeded Patrick in 2018, the domaine continues its unwavering pursuit of excellence, coupling engineering precision with deep respect for traditional Burgundian craftsmanship. The estate is distinguished by an exceptional vineyard portfolio: 7 Grands Crus and 11 Premiers Crus (including three monopoles) spread across prestigious villages in both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. Working biodynamically in roughly 17 hectares of vineyards—from Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis down through Chambolle-Musigny, Volnay, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet and beyond—the domaine seeks to express the purest possible character of each terroir. Long, gentle vinifications and extended aging on the lees have earned La Pousse d'Or a reputation for producing wines of remarkable balance, depth, and longevity, making them fixtures in serious Burgundy collections around the world.
