Description

The 2019 La Pousse d'Or Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is a radiant expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine terroirs. Crafted from Chardonnay vines farmed biodynamically and handled with meticulous care, this is a Grand Cru that marries power, finesse, and profound minerality. In the outstanding 2019 vintage, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has drawn out both the opulence and the crystalline precision that define great Chevalier-Montrachet. Sourced from steep, stony slopes perched above Montrachet, this cuvée stands out for its tension, depth and remarkable aging potential. Slow, natural vinification and extended maturation on lees—18 months in total, including 12 in oak—build layers of complexity without overshadowing the terroir. Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, guardian of some of Burgundy’s most illustrious crus for centuries, here offers a benchmark interpretation of Chevalier-Montrachet in a modern, biodynamic idiom.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet glows a pale to medium golden color with green reflections, hinting at both richness and youth. The nose opens with lifted aromas of white flowers and acacia, followed by ripe orchard fruits—pear, white peach and apple—interwoven with citrus oil, fresh lemon zest and a fine, chalky minerality. With air, more complex notes emerge: toasted hazelnut, almond cream, subtle brioche and a refined whisper of well-integrated oak. On the palate, this wine is at once concentrated and weightless, with a silken texture carried by a vibrant, finely etched acidity. Layers of citrus and stone fruit mingle with notes of crushed stones, salted butter, and a delicate smokiness typical of great Puligny-Montrachet grands crus. The finish is very long, precise and saline, leaving a lingering impression of citrus rind, spice and minerality. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and balance clearly point to significant aging potential; properly stored, this 2019 should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining further complexity, truffle, honey and nutty nuances with time.

Production
Chevalier-Montrachet sits high on the slope above Montrachet, with thin, well-drained limestone soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate the character of Chardonnay. Here, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or farms its vines under biodynamic principles, encouraging deep root systems and healthy, living soils that translate into purity and precision in the glass. Harvesting is done by hand, with careful sorting to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. Vinification follows a slow, natural path: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentations and a long, controlled élevage. The wine is aged on its fine lees for 18 months, of which around 12 months are spent in oak barrels, allowing texture and aromatic complexity to develop while preserving the wine’s inherent balance and tension.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves equally refined cuisine. It pairs superbly with noble seafood such as lobster, langoustines, scallops, or turbot in beurre blanc, as well as with delicately sauced poultry, veal in cream, or refined mushroom dishes. Aged Comté or other hard, subtly nutty cheeses can also be an outstanding match. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to unfold without losing freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to reveal the full spectrum of fruit and mineral notes; older bottles should be handled more gently, with a brief, careful decant only if needed to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Pousse d’Or is one of Burgundy’s historic and most respected estates, long renowned for its holdings in top premier and grand cru vineyards across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Today the domaine oversees about 17 hectares of vines in such celebrated villages as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet, with an enviable portfolio that includes 7 Grands Crus and 11 Premiers Crus, including several monopoles. Under the guidance of Benoît, who took the helm in 2018, La Pousse d’Or has deepened its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and gentle, long, lees-based élevage as a means to capture the purest expression of each terroir. This philosophy has cemented the domaine’s reputation as a benchmark producer, particularly for elegant, ageworthy Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that faithfully reflect Burgundy’s finest sites.
