Description
The 2019 La Pousse d'Or Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is a highly coveted expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of Chambolle’s most legendary Premier Cru vineyards. Often spoken of in the same breath as grands crus, Les Amoureuses is renowned for its haunting perfume, finesse and sensual texture, and this vintage captures that reputation beautifully. Crafted under biodynamic principles and long, gentle élevage, this is a wine that combines immediate seduction with serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Les Amoureuses shows a shimmering, translucent ruby hue with delicate brightness at the rim—classic, fine-boned Chambolle. The nose is intensely aromatic and refined, offering layers of wild strawberry, raspberry, red cherry and rose petals, intertwined with notes of violet, Asian spice, wet stone and a hint of fine sandalwood from the oak. With air, subtle nuances of pomegranate, crushed herbs and a faint, savory undercurrent emerge.
On the palate, this wine is all about texture and precision. Silky, ultra-fine tannins wrap around a core of pure red fruit, with wild strawberries, ripe cherries and redcurrants lifted by floral and mineral tones. The mid-palate is simultaneously delicate and concentrated, with remarkable energy and length. Fresh acidity keeps everything poised, while the oak is perfectly integrated, adding gentle structure and polish rather than weight. The finish is long, perfumed and saline, lingering with rose, spice and chalky minerality. 2019 is a ripe and generous vintage, but in Les Amoureuses it translates into depth without heaviness. While already captivating in its youth after proper aeration, this wine has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining in complexity, aromatic detail and tertiary nuance.
Production
Les Amoureuses is one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most prized Premier Cru vineyards, set on a finely fractured limestone and chalk subsoil with a thin, well-draining topsoil rich in stones—ideal for producing wines of delicacy and aromatic intensity. The site’s gentle slope and optimal exposure allow for perfect ripening of Pinot Noir while preserving freshness and finesse. At Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, the vines are farmed under biodynamic principles, with careful attention to soil life and vine balance, and harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure precise selection of only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, fermentation proceeds slowly and naturally, typically with indigenous yeasts and a gentle extraction regime to preserve the delicacy and floral character of Les Amoureuses. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for around 18 months, including approximately 12 months in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak), allowing texture and complexity to develop without overshadowing the purity of the fruit or the distinctive Chambolle terroir.
Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses shines with refined, delicately flavored dishes that echo its elegance rather than overpower it. Think roasted pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, duck breast with cherries, or simply a beautifully roasted chicken with thyme and root vegetables. It pairs wonderfully with earthy yet delicate ingredients like morels, truffles, and porcini, as well as fine charcuterie and soft, gently aged cheeses such as Brillat-Savarin or a young Époisses served at the right temperature. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to preserve its aromatic lift and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 60–90 minutes is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; with more bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant or even serving directly from the bottle with careful pouring will suffice.
Producer
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or is one of Burgundy’s benchmark estates, with roots that trace back several centuries in Volnay and a long-standing reputation for expressing some of the Côte d'Or’s most prestigious terroirs. Today, the domaine owns an impressive mosaic of 7 Grands Crus and 11 Premiers Crus (including several monopoles) across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, with holdings in iconic villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Pommard, Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. Under the leadership transition from Patrick Landanger to Benoît, the estate has doubled down on its pursuit of purity and precision, farming its approximately 17 hectares biodynamically and applying long, gentle vinification followed by extended lees aging. This meticulous, quality-driven approach has cemented La Pousse d'Or’s status as a reference in Burgundy, producing wines that are both faithful to their individual climats and capable of graceful, long-term aging.
