Description

2019 La Mondotte Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is one of the modern icons of Bordeaux, a powerful yet polished Right Bank red that captures the full character of its limestone plateau. Produced in tiny quantities from old vines and certified organic, it combines depth, precision and real finesse. Elevated in 2012 to Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B), La Mondotte has rapidly become a benchmark for collectors seeking concentrated yet classically shaped Saint-Emilion.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Mondotte is deep, almost opaque purple-ruby with a vivid, inky core and a tight, youthful rim. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackberries, black cherries and damson plum are wrapped in notes of violets, graphite, licorice, dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee, with a subtle mineral edge that hints at its limestone soils. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, muscular Saint-Emilion with superb concentration and energy. Silky but firm tannins frame a core of black fruit, crème de cassis and ripe plum, lifted by hints of crushed stone, pencil shavings, spice and cocoa. The acidity is vibrant and gives the wine excellent tension and precision, while the finish is long, savory and finely etched, lingering with dark fruit and mineral notes. Still tightly knit, the 2019 will reward patience: it can be approached from around 2026–2027, but has the structure to evolve gracefully for 20–30 years in a good cellar.

Production
La Mondotte’s 4.5-hectare vineyard sits on the prime limestone slopes of Saint-Emilion, between Bellevue-Mondotte and Troplong Mondot, on shallow clay-limestone soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor. The average vine age is around 50 years, and the estate is fully planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, farmed with certified organic methods following the von Neipperg family’s progressive philosophy. The 2019 is a blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, harvested by hand in small crates with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats with gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by élevage in high-quality French oak barrels (a high proportion new) in specially designed underground cellars. Low yields, meticulous selection and extended barrel aging result in a wine of great density, purity and longevity.

Food & Serving
2019 La Mondotte is best paired with richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its concentration and structure: roast or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef short ribs, venison, or slow-braised game birds. It is also superb with truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes, duck with red wine reductions and matured hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux stems; in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften. As the wine matures, a shorter decant of 45–60 minutes will usually be sufficient to remove sediment and open up its more complex tertiary nuances.

Producer
Although the roots of La Mondotte go back to the 19th century, the estate as we know it today was effectively reborn under the stewardship of the von Neipperg family, who purchased it in 1971 along with neighboring Canon-La-Gaffelière. For years La Mondotte remained relatively discreet, until Stephan von Neipperg launched a dramatic qualitative revolution in the mid-1990s: building a new château and cellars, drastically lowering yields, embracing meticulous vineyard work on its clay-limestone slopes and moving toward organic viticulture, with guidance from renowned consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. The critically acclaimed 1996 vintage marked a turning point, and a series of outstanding wines since then propelled La Mondotte from an unclassified estate to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) status in the 2012 Saint-Emilion classification. Today, producing fewer than 10,000 bottles annually, La Mondotte is recognized as one of the most coveted, small-production Grand Crus of Saint-Emilion, emblematic of the region’s modern, terroir-driven renaissance.
