Description

Bottled in rare magnum format, the 2019 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru stands at the very pinnacle of white Burgundy. Sourced from the largest and most storied single holding within the legendary Montrachet vineyard, this is a wine of immense depth, precision and longevity. Combining the finesse of Joseph Drouhin’s biodynamic approach with the incomparable terroir of Montrachet, it offers a benchmark expression of Grand Cru Chardonnay with a pedigree stretching back to the 18th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru shows a luminous, intense golden hue with green highlights that hint at both concentration and youth. The bouquet is immediately expansive and complex, bursting with aromas of orange zest, ripe pear and honeyed stone fruit, layered with white flowers, citrus blossom, roasted almonds and a subtle saline minerality. Hints of pastry cream, toasted brioche and faint spice emerge with air, underscoring its Grand Cru stature. On the palate, this is powerful yet supremely refined, with a rich, layered texture that seems to envelop every corner of the mouth. The core is deeply concentrated, offering flavors of pear, Meyer lemon, nectarine and subtle tropical tones, framed by notes of hazelnut, almond and a delicate, buttery nuance from judicious oak. A vibrant line of acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone keep the wine taut and precise, driving it through to an admirably long, saline and mouthwatering finish. In magnum, its aging potential is exceptional; while already impressive, it will gain even more complexity and harmony over 10–20+ years in a proper cellar.

Production
Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche lies on the Puligny side of this legendary Grand Cru, in the southern Côte de Beaune, on a gentle slope with a prized south-eastern exposure that maximizes morning light and even ripening. The soils are a finely balanced mix of limestone and clay, exceptionally well-drained, contributing both power and mineral finesse to the Chardonnay. Under Joseph Drouhin’s organic and biodynamic regime, only natural treatments are used in the vines, with meticulous canopy management and strict yield control to capture the purest expression of terroir. Harvesting is carried out by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection of the healthiest, most perfect clusters. In the cellar, Drouhin favors a sensitive, non-interventionist vinification: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak (with a measured proportion of new barrels), followed by extended lees aging to build texture and complexity, always seeking balance, elegance and transparency over overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru white Burgundy calls for refined, luxurious cuisine that can match its depth and complexity. It is superb with butter-poached lobster, scallops in a delicate cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole meunière, as well as roasted Bresse chicken with morels or truffled poultry dishes. Rich, creamy cheeses such as aged Comté or mild, well-aged Gruyère can also be excellent partners. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully open without losing precision. Decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the wine stretch out and reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavors, with the magnum format benefiting particularly from aeration.

Producer
Founded in 1880 in Beaune by the enterprising young Joseph Drouhin from Chablis, Maison Joseph Drouhin has grown into one of Burgundy’s most respected family domaines. Now spanning nearly 90 appellations across the region, the house is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture and for a style built on finesse, balance and a clear transmission of terroir. The partnership with the Marquis de Laguiche family, custodians of this Montrachet parcel since 1776, dates back to 1947, with Drouhin entrusted to cultivate and vinify this historic holding. Over the decades, Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche has become one of the most coveted white wines in the world, symbolizing both the prestige of Burgundy and Joseph Drouhin’s reputation for crafting wines of purity, elegance and remarkable longevity.
