Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2019 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most storied producers. Sourced from the prized, east-facing slopes of Les Languettes, this Chardonnay captures the tension, power and finesse that have made Corton-Charlemagne legendary. Limited to a tiny production of just six barrels, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential for discerning collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous pale gold color with green reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is initially reserved but reveals itself with air: citrus oils, especially orange and lemon zest, mingle with white peach, crushed stone, and a subtle floral lift, underpinned by notes of toasted hazelnut and delicate spice. On the palate, this Grand Cru is structured and precise, with a firm, almost architectural backbone of acidity. Flavors of orange peel, ripe stone fruit and juicy pear unfold over a core of chalky minerality, finishing with a savory, spicy touch of ginger and a lightly saline edge. The texture is both generous and tightly coiled, suggesting that while it can be enjoyed now with proper aeration, it will gain in complexity and harmony over the next 10–20 years in a well-kept cellar, especially in magnum.

Production
The fruit for this wine comes from the esteemed Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, specifically the east-facing climat of Les Languettes, where limestone-rich soils and cool exposure yield chiseled, mineral-driven Chardonnay. Joseph Drouhin farms these vineyards with certified organic and biodynamic practices, using only natural products and methods that respect the vine and the wider ecosystem. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted for quality, and gently pressed before fermentation. Vinification typically occurs in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to support, rather than mask, the terroir; extended lees aging adds depth and texture while preserving the wine’s hallmark freshness and precision.

Food & Serving
This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a sophisticated partner for rich yet refined dishes such as lobster with beurre blanc, turbot or sole in creamy sauces, scallops, roasted poultry with morels, or veal in a delicate cream reduction. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or a mature Gruyère. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromatic complexity to blossom. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth, particularly from magnum, to help the initially tight bouquet open and the palate’s full spectrum of flavors emerge.

Producer
Founded in 1880 in Beaune by the enterprising young Joseph Drouhin from Chablis, Maison Joseph Drouhin has grown into one of Burgundy’s most respected family-run domaines. Today, the estate encompasses nearly 90 different appellations, offering an unparalleled panorama of Burgundy’s diverse terroirs, all interpreted with a house style that emphasizes elegance, balance, and finesse. A pioneer in embracing organic and biodynamic viticulture on a large scale in the region, Drouhin has become a reference point for purity and authenticity in both red and white Burgundy. Their work in prestigious sites such as Corton-Charlemagne has cemented the family’s reputation as guardians of some of the Côte d’Or’s most important vineyards, producing wines that age gracefully and express their origins with clarity and precision.
