Description
The 2019 Inglenook Rubicon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Rutherford Magnum is a commanding yet refined expression of one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates. Presented in a generous 1.5L format, it captures the energy and elegance of a great Rutherford red while offering the added aging grace and drama that only a magnum can deliver. Long regarded as an icon wine, Rubicon represents the pinnacle of Inglenook’s estate vineyards, crafted in distinctly Bordeaux-inspired fashion from organically grown fruit.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Rubicon shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue that clings to the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is vivid and layered: warm cassis, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly mingle with aromas of graphite, crushed rock, bay leaf and pencil shavings. With air, more complex tones emerge—espresso roast, clove, cassis buds and a suggestion of cocoa nib and cedar.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, poised and tightly knit rather than heavy. The core of blackcurrant and ripe dark berry fruit is framed by finely grained, firm tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. Subtle savory notes—dried herbs, spice box and mineral undertones—add complexity as the wine unfolds across the palate. The finish is long, precise and mineral-driven, echoing cassis, blackberries and a touch of dark chocolate. In magnum, the 2019 Rubicon has excellent aging potential; it will reward patient cellaring over 15–25 years, gaining further nuance, polish and aromatic complexity.
Production
Sourced exclusively from Inglenook’s historic estate vineyards in Rutherford, in the heart of Napa Valley, Rubicon is shaped by the famed “Rutherford dust” terroir—well-drained alluvial and benchland soils that naturally produce Cabernet of depth, structure and a distinct mineral signature. The 2019 Rubicon is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, carefully selected from the finest-performing blocks of the property. The vineyard is farmed organically, with close attention to canopy management and yield control to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at dawn, sorted berry by berry and vinified in small lots to preserve the character of each parcel. After a controlled fermentation and gentle maceration to extract color, aroma and polished tannins, the wine is aged in French oak, allowing it to integrate its structure and develop the signature elegance and refinement that define Rubicon.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Rubicon Magnum is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored cuisine: think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, or classic French dishes such as duck breast, tournedos Rossini or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and structure, decanting is recommended—45–60 minutes for more primary fruit and vibrancy, or up to two hours if you prefer the tannins more resolved and the secondary notes more pronounced, especially in this slower-evolving magnum format.
Producer
Inglenook is one of Napa Valley’s true founding estates, established in Rutherford in the late 19th century by Finnish sea captain and visionary Gustave Niebaum. It was here that Niebaum first championed Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa, and his descendant John Daniel Jr. carried that legacy forward, crafting legendary wines such as the celebrated 1941 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, the estate is owned by Francis Ford Coppola and has been meticulously restored to its former glory, with Philippe Bascaules—who also serves as Managing Director of Château Margaux—at the helm of winemaking. Inglenook’s wines, including Rubicon, are distributed via the prestigious Place de Bordeaux alongside other global icons, underscoring the estate’s enduring significance and its status as a benchmark for Rutherford and Napa Valley Cabernet-based blends.
