Description

The 2019 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon from Napa Valley’s famed Rutherford AVA is a benchmark estate wine that captures the soul of historic Inglenook in a modern, finely tuned expression. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it marries power with remarkable finesse and precision. With stellar critical acclaim (Parker 96+/100, James Suckling 97/100), this is a collector-worthy bottling that sits comfortably alongside Napa’s most iconic labels.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Rubicon shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue that hints at both concentration and youth. The appearance is dense at the core, with just a touch of brighter rim suggesting long-term aging capability. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of warm blackcurrant (cassis) and blackberry pie, lifted by redcurrant jelly and a cool, graphite-mineral edge. Layers of crushed stone, bay leaf and pencil shavings recall top-tier Bordeaux, while air reveals savory notes of espresso, clove, cassis bud and a subtle hint of dried flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a beautifully judged balance between ripe fruit intensity and an energetic, mineral-driven structure. Dark berries and cassis are framed by finely grained, firm tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity, giving the wine both precision and length. The finish is long, vibrant and distinctly mineral, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice and subtle herb. Still youthful, this Rubicon has the architecture to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with proper cellaring.

Production
Rubicon is sourced exclusively from organically farmed estate vineyards in Rutherford, in the heart of Napa Valley. The terroir combines well-draining alluvial soils, Rutherford’s signature dust, abundant sunshine and cooling evening breezes, all of which help to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon fully while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with meticulous selection to capture only the finest lots from the estate’s best-performing blocks. In the winery, each variety—Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (3%)—is vinified separately to respect the nuances of site and clone before being blended to achieve the desired profile. Fermentations are carefully temperature-controlled to extract color, aroma and fine tannins without harshness, followed by aging in French oak barrels. This sophisticated élevage, guided by director of winemaking Philippe Bascaules, brings depth, polish and harmony while allowing the vineyard character to remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Rubicon is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, lamb rack with rosemary and garlic, venison with red wine reduction, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffled mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting is strongly recommended: 1–2 hours for youthful vibrancy and aromatic expansion now, and 30–60 minutes will be sufficient as the wine develops with age. In a large-bowled Bordeaux glass, Rubicon shows its full spectrum of fruit, spice and mineral notes.

Producer
Inglenook is one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates, with roots dating back to the late 19th century when Finnish sea captain Gustave Niebaum founded the property and helped introduce high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon to the region. His legacy was carried forward by his descendant John Daniel Jr., who elevated Inglenook’s Cabernet to legendary status with landmark vintages such as 1941. Today, under the stewardship of Francis Ford Coppola and the direction of renowned winemaker Philippe Bascaules—who also serves as Managing Director of Château Margaux—Inglenook continues to be a reference point for classic, estate-grown Napa wines. The estate is recognized for its organically farmed vineyards, its role in shaping the reputation of Rutherford Cabernet, and its placement among the great icons of Napa that are distributed via the prestigious Place de Bordeaux.
