Description
The 2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a benchmark single-vineyard Brunello from one of the region’s most historic estates. Crafted exclusively from old-vine Sangiovese Grosso, it showcases the depth, structure and longevity that have made Brunello di Montalcino a collector’s favorite. This Riserva comes from the revered Vigna Paganelli parcel, planted in 1964, and is only produced in top vintages, making the 2019 a particularly noteworthy release.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vigna Paganelli Riserva shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and classic Brunello typicity. The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange peel woven together with notes of dried rose, tobacco leaf, leather, sweet spices and a touch of Mediterranean herbs and cedar.
On the palate, this is a firmly structured yet refined Brunello, with vibrant acidity carrying intense flavors of sour cherry, plum, black tea, licorice and savory spice. Fine-grained tannins provide grip and definition without feeling harsh, supporting a long, mineral-tinged finish that echoes with balsamic notes and dried flowers. Still youthful and energetic, the 2019 has substantial aging potential: it will reward 10–20+ years in the cellar, gaining further complexity, silkier texture and more tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Vigna Paganelli is a historic single vineyard located in the southern part of Montalcino, near Sant’Angelo in Colle, where warm days, cool nights and well-drained, stony soils rich in galestro and clay create ideal conditions for Sangiovese Grosso. The vines, planted in 1964, are among the oldest in the area and serve as a massal selection source for Il Poggione’s other vineyards. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with rigorous bunch selection to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the Riserva. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannins and aromatics. The wine is then aged traditionally for several years in large French oak casks (botti), followed by additional time in bottle before release, allowing the powerful structure to knit together and the aromatics to fully develop.
Food & Serving
This is a classic Brunello to bring to the table with richly flavored dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, wild boar ragù, braised beef, game birds and truffle-laced pasta or risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano-Reggiano and mature cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 17–18°C (around 62–64°F). For a young vintage like 2019, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment without over-aerating.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of Montalcino’s historic, reference-point estates, with origins dating back to the late 19th century. Located in the southern part of the appellation near Sant’Angelo in Colle, the winery was among the early pioneers of Brunello di Montalcino and helped establish the region’s global reputation for age-worthy Sangiovese. Over the decades, Il Poggione has become known for its traditional yet meticulous approach: old-vine vineyards, careful farming and long aging in large oak casks. Vigna Paganelli, in particular, is famed not only for producing its flagship Riserva but also as a source of top-quality vine material used throughout the estate. Il Poggione’s Brunelli consistently feature in international critics’ top ratings and remain benchmark expressions of the southern Montalcino terroir.
