Description

The 2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Balthazar (12L) is a commanding, cellar‑worthy expression of one of Tuscany’s most historic estates. Bottled in an impressive 12‑liter format, this wine is crafted for grand occasions, long-term aging, and collectors who appreciate Brunello at its most classic and age-defying. The 2019 vintage in Montalcino is widely regarded as excellent, combining concentration, finesse, and freshness—traits that Il Poggione’s traditional style showcases beautifully.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep garnet core with youthful ruby reflections at the rim, hinting at years of evolution ahead. The nose is complex and refined, opening with dark cherry, black plum, and wild strawberry, followed by notes of dried roses, leather, tobacco leaf, and sweet spices such as clove and cinnamon. Hints of Mediterranean herbs, cedar, and a subtle earthy minerality add further layers as it breathes. On the palate, this is a structured yet polished Brunello, showcasing pure Sangiovese fruit wrapped in fine, firm tannins. Flavors of ripe red and black cherries, macerated berries, and blood orange are supported by savory undertones of balsamic, forest floor, and a touch of cocoa. The acidity is vibrant and perfectly integrated, giving the wine lift and precision, while the long, persistent finish carries notes of spice and dried flowers. In a 12‑liter Balthazar, the evolution is slower and more graceful than in standard bottles—properly stored, this wine can age and improve for 25–35 years or more, developing even greater complexity and silkier texture over time.

Production
Sourced from Il Poggione’s estate vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, the 2019 Brunello comes from hillside sites with a mix of clay, limestone, and galestro (friable marl) soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The Mediterranean climate, with warm days, cool nights, and constant breezes, allows Sangiovese (locally known as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello) to ripen slowly while retaining freshness. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal maturity and rigorously sorted in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma, and tannin. The wine is then traditionally aged for several years in large French oak casks (botti), a hallmark of Il Poggione’s style, before additional bottle rest—here, in the rare and painstakingly prepared 12‑liter Balthazar—ensures harmony and longevity.

Food & Serving
This Balthazar of 2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is ideal for large gatherings and celebratory dinners, pairing beautifully with rich Tuscan-inspired dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, wild boar ragù, truffle risotto, and aged pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano. It also works wonderfully with hearty mushroom dishes and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 17–18°C (62–65°F) for optimal expression. Given the format and youth of the vintage, generous aeration is essential: decant at least 2–3 hours before serving—longer if you prefer a more open, velvety profile—and use large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold.

Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic pillars of Brunello di Montalcino, with a history in the region dating back to the late 19th century. Located in the southern zone of Montalcino near Sant’Angelo in Colle, the estate has long championed meticulous vineyard work and a traditional, terroir-driven style of Brunello. Over the decades, Il Poggione has played an important role in establishing Montalcino’s reputation worldwide, consistently producing wines that are highly regarded by critics and collectors alike for their depth, authenticity, and aging capacity. Today the winery is considered a benchmark for classic Brunello—combining heritage, rigorous viticulture, and restrained oak usage to craft wines that authentically reflect the region’s character and stand the test of time.
