Description
The 2019 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline Estate is a powerful yet polished expression of Napa Valley, drawn from the estate’s prized Blueline Vineyard. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of other Bordeaux varieties, it delivers depth, opulence, and remarkable finesse in equal measure. This bottling has quickly become a modern Napa benchmark, showcasing the distinctive personality of the Blueline terroir in a richly layered, cellar-worthy red.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is nearly opaque, with a dense purple-black core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is expansive and intensely aromatic, bursting with crème de cassis, blackberry tart, and chocolate-covered cherries, woven with notes of Indian spices, menthol, licorice, and a subtle sandalwood nuance.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, plush, and deeply concentrated, delivering layers of black and blue fruits framed by velvety tannins. Exotic spice tones unfurl across the mid-palate, complementing the ripe dark berries and adding complexity and intrigue. There is just enough freshness to keep the richness in balance, leading into an exceptionally long, persistent finish that echoes with cassis, dark chocolate, and spice. While already impressive in its youth, this vintage has the structure and intensity to evolve beautifully over the next decade or more.
Production
The Blueline Estate lies in Napa Valley, where warm days, cool nights, and well-draining, rocky soils provide ideal conditions for concentrated, structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, ensuring meticulous selection of only the best clusters. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with a focus on purity and precision: gentle extraction to build rich texture without harshness, followed by aging in premium oak barrels to integrate tannins and add subtle layers of spice and complexity. The final blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with small proportions of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, is assembled to showcase both power and elegance.
Food & Serving
This generous, structured Cabernet is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as grilled ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, lamb chops with rosemary, or game meats in dark, reduction sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open and fully reveal its layers of fruit, spice, and oak.
