Description

The 2019 Günther Steinmetz Pinot Noir Mühlheimer Sonnenlay *** Unfiltered is an expressive, terroir-driven Spätburgunder from one of Mosel’s most exciting artisan producers. Sourced from the steep, slate-rich Mühlheimer Sonnenlay vineyard, this cuvée marries Burgundian finesse with Mosel’s signature minerality. Bottled unfiltered and crafted with minimal intervention, it offers a pure, transparent snapshot of site, vintage, and grape in perfect balance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a luminous, medium ruby core with delicate garnet hues at the rim. The nose is fragrant and detailed, weaving together wild red berries, cranberry, sour cherry, and raspberry with lifted notes of rose petals, dried herbs, crushed slate, and a hint of blood orange zest and fine spice. On the palate, the wine is precise, fresh, and finely etched, with silky yet energetic tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that carries the fruit. Red cherry, pomegranate, and red currant unfold alongside subtle forest floor, black tea, and a distinctly rocky, mineral backbone that is very Mosel. The unfiltered approach lends a gentle texture and depth, while the finish is long, savory, and gracefully taut. While already approachable, this 2019 has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuance.

Production
The Mühlheimer Sonnenlay vineyard is a steep, slate-dominated slope overlooking the Mosel, where thin, rocky soils and excellent drainage stress the vines just enough to produce small, intensely flavored berries. Günther Steinmetz works these vineyards largely by hand due to the incline, favoring low yields and careful selection at harvest to ensure pristine fruit. In the cellar, the Spätburgunder is typically fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, often with a portion of whole clusters to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. Aging takes place in wooden barrels, allowing gentle micro-oxygenation without overpowering the delicate fruit and mineral character. The wine is bottled unfiltered, preserving maximum flavor detail, texture, and a true sense of place.

Food & Serving
This Mosel Pinot Noir is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, game birds, mushroom risotto, veal, or simply grilled salmon. It also works well alongside charcuterie, aged mountain cheeses, and dishes with earthy components like truffle or beetroot. Serve at 14–16°C (57–60°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up and fully express its floral and mineral nuances.

Producer
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a small, quality-driven estate based in Brauneberg in the Mosel, long respected for its steep-slope Rieslings and increasingly acclaimed for its characterful, cool-climate Spätburgunder. Under the guidance of Stefan Steinmetz, the winery has embraced meticulous vineyard work, old vines, and a low-intervention philosophy that prioritizes native yeasts, careful extraction, and minimal fining or filtration. This approach has positioned Steinmetz as one of the region’s most compelling voices in terroir-focused wines, with critics and sommeliers alike praising the precision, authenticity, and age-worthiness of the estate’s bottlings from select sites such as Mühlheimer Sonnenlay.
