Description

The 2019 Forman Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully composed, classically styled red that showcases the elegance of hillside Napa fruit and the hand-crafted vision of Ric Forman. Made in tiny quantities from estate vineyards perched on a ridge at the base of Howell Mountain above St. Helena, it bridges Old World finesse with New World purity and intensity. With a Cabernet Sauvignon core supported by the full Bordeaux quartet, this wine delivers both immediate pleasure and serious cellar potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with a youthful brightness at the rim, hinting at its energy and longevity. The nose unfolds in layers: ripe blackcurrant and blackberry compote intertwined with notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, dried violets, and graphite, all framed by subtle vanilla, cedar, and a gentle smoky accent from fine French oak. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a refined, mouth-filling texture and ultrafine, polished tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, and dark plum are complemented by hints of cocoa, sweet tobacco, baking spices, and a whisper of savory herbs from the Cabernet Franc component. The 22 months in predominantly new Bordeaux barriques lend structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit, leading to a long, layered finish that is rich yet wonderfully fresh. While already very appealing with some air, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity.

Production
Forman Vineyard sits on a ridge at the foot of Howell Mountain overlooking St. Helena, a prime Napa Valley terroir known for its well-drained, rocky soils and hillside exposure that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The estate is divided into four parcels planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, echoing the great Bordeaux blends that inspire Ric Forman’s style. Grapes are harvested by hand and handled with great care from vineyard to winery, preserving fruit integrity. For the reds, fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks to maintain precise control over extraction and temperature. The 2019 blend is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, matured for 22 months in Bordeaux barrels (approximately 75% new and 25% second-fill). The wines age in deep caves carved into the hillside, providing a naturally cool, dark, and humid environment where the Cabernet can develop slowly and harmoniously quite literally in the earth from which it grew.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet serious Napa Cabernet blend that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think grilled or roasted lamb, beef ribeye, dry-aged steaks, venison, or braised short ribs, as well as game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and hard cheeses like aged Comté or cheddar. Its tobacco and cedar notes also make it a superb partner to dishes with earthy components such as mushrooms, root vegetables, or rosemary and thyme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours of decanting to fully open the layers of fruit, spice, and savory nuance, while older, cellared bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment.

Producer
Forman Vineyard was founded in 1983 by Ric Forman, one of Napa Valley’s most respected traditionalists. After a three-year search throughout Napa for the ideal site, he acquired the current ridge-top property in 1978 at the base of Howell Mountain, overlooking St. Helena—a location that has since become synonymous with refined, classically balanced Napa Cabernet. From the outset, Forman has favored an approach more aligned with European sensibilities: moderate ripeness, elegance over power, meticulous vineyard work, and minimal but thoughtful intervention in the cellar. The estate’s small stone cellar, integrated into the hillside and connected to deep caves, reflects this artisanal philosophy. Over the decades, Forman Vineyard has earned a quiet but enduring reputation among collectors and sommeliers for producing some of Napa’s most sophisticated, Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, wines that age gracefully and speak clearly of their place.
