Description
From one of Burgundy’s most respected family domaines, the 2019 Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Gain is a refined, terroir-driven expression of Chardonnay from the upper slopes of Puligny. Sourced from a prized Premier Cru site just below La Garenne, this wine combines crystalline precision with generous, sun-kissed fruit. First planted on land reclaimed from forest, Champs Gain today yields wines that capture both the purity and power of great white Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru shows a luminous pale gold color with green highlights, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive and layered, opening with vibrant aromas of citrus zest and fresh lemon, followed by exotic notes of passionfruit and ripe pineapple. Subtle, well-judged oak contributes refined nuances of toasted brioche and light vanilla, sitting elegantly in the background rather than dominating.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, yet remains beautifully poised. Juicy citrus and stone-fruit flavors are wrapped in a fine, chalky minerality that runs through the core of the wine, giving it both tension and length. The mid-palate shows depth and creaminess, balanced by a precise line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. The finish is long, tight and mineral, lingering with layers of citrus, subtle tropical fruit and a touch of toast. While already approachable in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and balance to develop further complexity over 8–12 years in a good cellar.
Production
Champs Gain lies high on the slope of Puligny-Montrachet, on thin, stony limestone soils mixed with clay, providing excellent drainage and a cool, airy exposition that favors finesse and mineral intensity. Domaine Faiveley farms the vineyard with meticulous care, harvesting by hand to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy Chardonnay grapes are selected. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented in oak barrels, with a thoughtful use of new wood to add subtle structure without masking the terroir. The wine is then aged on fine lees, typically in a mix of new and seasoned French oak, allowing it to gain texture, complexity and aromatic depth while preserving the clarity and precision that are the hallmarks of Puligny-Montrachet.
Food & Serving
This 1er Cru Puligny is an excellent partner for refined seafood and white meat dishes: think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light citrus or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole, as well as roast chicken with morel or truffle cream, and delicate veal dishes. It also pairs beautifully with fine cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or aged goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both its aromatic complexity and tension. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a generous swirl in large-bowled white Burgundy glasses to allow the wine to open and reveal its full spectrum of fruit and minerality.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic estates, today encompassing around 120 hectares of vines, including significant holdings in both Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites. Over generations, the Faiveley family has built a reputation for crafting wines that are at once classical, ageworthy and deeply expressive of their origin, with key vineyards in appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis Grand Cru. Now led by the latest generation, the domaine blends modern precision in the winery with the traditional practices honed in their 19th-century cellars. Widely regarded as a benchmark producer that “represents the full glory of French viticulture,” Faiveley has played a major role in showcasing the elegance and complexity of Burgundy wines to discerning drinkers around the world.
