Description
The 2019 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered family domaines. Drawn from less than one hectare of prime Grand Cru terroir high on the Corton hill, it marries power, tension and mineral depth in a way that only Corton-Charlemagne can. This is Faiveley’s flagship white wine – a Grand Cru with a long, storied history at the estate and a wine built for both contemplation and long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is pale gold with youthful green highlights, hinting at its freshness and aging potential. The nose opens with refined, subtle aromas: white peach, pear and citrus zest interwoven with white flowers, cool stone, and a delicate touch of hazelnut and fresh butter from its élevage. With air, more complexity emerges – notes of crushed oyster shell, chalk dust and a discreet hint of spice.
On the palate, the wine is intense yet supremely precise, with a powerful, linear core of acidity that carries flavors of ripe stone fruit, lemon curd and green apple across the tongue. The texture is silky but firmly structured, underpinned by a pronounced, saline minerality that is the signature of Corton-Charlemagne’s higher slopes. The finish is very long, focused and persistent, leaving lingering notes of citrus, smoke and wet stone. While already impressive in its youth, this 2019 will reward patience: expect a prime drinking window from 2026 onward, with the capacity to evolve gracefully for 10–20 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Faiveley’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from 0.86 hectares of Chardonnay planted in a mosaic of four parcels in the climats of Le Corton and Le Rognet et Corton. Perched between roughly 305 and 360 meters in altitude, these vines span diverse soils: more clay-influenced at the eastern base and gray marl higher up, delivering both depth and striking mineral tension. The vineyard includes venerable old vines planted in 1933 and 1935, complemented by younger plantings from 1987, 1988 and 2010. Harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods are combined with precise, modern winemaking: gentle pressing, fermentation and aging in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) on fine lees, to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s innate freshness and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru calls for refined, delicately rich cuisine that can match its depth without overpowering its precision. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or citrus beurre blanc, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted chicken with morel or truffle sauce, or veal sweetbreads. It also shines alongside aged Comté, Beaufort or other nutty alpine cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F). Young bottles will benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl; older, well-matured bottles should be handled more gently, with a brief, careful decant or simply opened in advance and allowed to breathe in the glass.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic family estates, now spanning around 120 hectares of vines across some of the region’s most prestigious appellations, including Gevrey-Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux and Montrachet. Under successive generations, beginning with Joseph Faiveley, the domaine built an international reputation as an ambassador for Burgundy’s finest wines. Today, Faiveley is recognized for its clear, elegant and terroir-driven style, uniting carefully updated cellar practices with age-old traditions in their 19th-century cellars. With 10 hectares of Grand Cru and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Cru, the estate holds a particularly important position in the Côte d’Or, and its Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru – in the family since 1874 – stands as one of the most emblematic and sought-after whites in its portfolio.
