Description

From one of Burgundy’s most revered family domaines, the 2019 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is a rare and highly coveted expression of Pinot Noir. Sourced from a tiny 0.56-hectare parcel that borders the legendary Grand Cru Musigny, this wine marries sensual elegance with remarkable depth and precision. Often spoken of as a “Grand Cru in all but name,” Les Amoureuses is widely regarded as the most refined and ethereal premier cru of Chambolle-Musigny.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Les Amoureuses shows a limpid, shimmering ruby color with brilliant highlights, hinting at both delicacy and concentration. The nose is pure and perfumed, opening with wild strawberries, raspberries, and red cherries, layered with notes of rose petals, violet, and peony. With air, more complex nuances emerge: fine Asian spice, orange zest, a touch of graphite, and a subtle, chalky minerality that is very much the signature of Chambolle. On the palate, this is all about finesse and inner intensity rather than sheer power. The mouthfeel is silken and caressing, with ultra-fine tannins framing a core of vibrant red fruit, crushed berries, and subtle blood orange. A precise, limestone-driven freshness runs through the wine, giving it lift, energy, and an almost weightless texture. The finish is long, filigreed, and persistent, echoing with floral notes and saline minerality. While already seductive in youth, the 2019 has the structure and balance to develop gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
Les Amoureuses sits on a prime slope in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, directly adjacent to the Grand Cru Musigny. The terroir is characterized by very thin topsoil over fractured limestone, with a high proportion of stones that provide superb drainage and help create the hallmark delicacy and aromatic lift of the site. Faiveley farms this minute 0.56-hectare premier cru parcel organically, without seeking formal certification, focusing on meticulous vineyard work and low yields that result in only a few barriques each year. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified with great precision in the domaine’s historic 19th-century cellars. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with a judicious use of whole clusters depending on the vintage, followed by élevage in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new, but always balanced), allowing the wine to integrate oak and terroir expression harmoniously.

Food & Serving
This is a wine best paired with refined, delicately textured dishes that won’t overwhelm its subtlety and perfume. Consider veal tenderloin with morel sauce, roast pigeon or quail, duck breast with cherries, or simply roasted Bresse chicken with truffled jus. It also shines alongside earthy yet elegant dishes such as mushroom risotto, wild mushroom fricassée, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky structure. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfurl; older bottles should be handled gently and, if decanted at all, only briefly before serving.

Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic estates and remains family-owned and operated to this day. Over seven generations, the family has assembled around 120 hectares of prime vineyards across the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise, including some of the region’s most illustrious grand cru and premier cru sites. With holdings in appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis Grand Cru, Faiveley is a benchmark name, frequently cited by leading critics as a reference for classical yet contemporary Burgundy. The domaine’s philosophy combines modern precision with time-honored cellar traditions, aiming to craft wines that are faithful reflections of their terroirs. Their work in Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses encapsulates this approach, producing one of the most refined and sought-after expressions of Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits.
