Description
The 2019 Eisele Vineyard Syrah is a profoundly expressive red from one of Napa Valley’s most revered single vineyards, nestled just east of Calistoga at the foot of the Palisades. Drawn from meticulously farmed Syrah parcels within this historic site, the wine marries depth and power with remarkable precision and finesse. Its unique selling point lies in the combination of a great Rhône variety with a grand cru–level Napa terroir that has been cultivated organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, yielding wines of purity, transparency, and longevity. First planted to vines in the 1880s, Eisele Vineyard has long been recognized as a benchmark site, and its Syrah is now regarded as one of California’s most serious and collectible expressions of the grape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Eisele Vineyard Syrah shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple core with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and intense, offering blackcurrant and cassis alongside ripe blackberry and blueberry, lifted by notes of cracked black pepper, violets, dried herbs and a subtle graphite minerality. As it opens, more savory nuances emerge: smoked meat, black olive tapenade, warm spice and a touch of cocoa.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet beautifully composed, with a core of dark berry fruit framed by fine-grained, well-integrated tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity. Flavors of blackcurrant, plum and blackberry are interwoven with pepper, exotic spice, licorice and a subtle gamey complexity that is characteristic of top Syrah. The texture is supple but firm, with a long, tapering finish that carries notes of cassis, mineral and savory spice. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential; under proper cellaring conditions, the 2019 Eisele Syrah should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further aromatic complexity and silkier tannins.
Production
Eisele Vineyard lies in the northeast corner of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga, where alluvial fans from the Palisades mountains have created well-drained, cobbly and gravelly soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor. The Syrah for this cuvée is sourced from specific, carefully selected parcels within the estate, all farmed according to certified organic and biodynamic principles to maximize soil health and terroir expression. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness, sorted meticulously in the vineyard and again at the winery. Vinification is carried out in small lots, often with a careful balance of destemmed fruit and, where appropriate, a portion of whole clusters to enhance aromatics and structure. Fermentations proceed under temperature control, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than sheer power, and the young wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a portion new) to add polish and complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit or the distinctive mineral signatures of the site.
Food & Serving
Eisele Vineyard’s 2019 Syrah is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think grilled or roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, game birds, venison or slow-cooked beef stews, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, black olives or Mediterranean herbs. Aged hard cheeses, such as Comté, Manchego or mature Gouda, also complement its dark fruit and spice. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl; older bottles will benefit from a shorter, more gentle decant to separate sediment while preserving delicate tertiary notes.
Producer
Eisele Vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s most storied and respected estate vineyards, first planted to vines in the 1880s and continuously cultivated ever since. Long known among insiders for its remarkable terroir, the site rose to international prominence in the late 20th century when single-vineyard bottlings from its Cabernet parcels began to receive critical acclaim and set new benchmarks for Napa elegance and ageability. The estate has been farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, underscoring a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and terroir transparency. In 2013, the property was acquired by the owners of Château Latour, further cementing its status as a world-class winegrowing estate. Today, under the Eisele Vineyard name, the winery is celebrated not only for its iconic Cabernet Sauvignon but also for its limited, highly sought-after Syrah, which consistently ranks among California’s finest interpretations of the variety.
