Description
2019 E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi comes from one of Barolo’s most legendary crus, the sun‑drenched Cannubi hill in the heart of Piemonte. Crafted exclusively from old-vine Nebbiolo, this is a Barolo that marries power, precision and sensuality in equal measure. With a 97-point score from Antonio Galloni (Vinous), it stands out as one of the truly great interpretations of this historic vineyard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cannubi shows a luminous, clear ruby red with delicate garnet reflections at the rim. The bouquet is complex and refined, opening with deep notes of blackcurrant and licorice, followed by red cherry, wild strawberry and a gentle floral lift of jasmine. Subtle layers of cedar, sweet spices and a hint of tobacco emerge with air, underlining the wine’s finesse and careful élevage.
On the palate, this Barolo is warm, concentrated and beautifully structured, with an impressive depth of fruit wrapped in fine, persistent tannins. Ripe red and black berries are framed by notes of anise, dried rose petal and polished wood, leading into a long, precise and harmonious finish. The tannic structure is firm yet silky, suggesting excellent aging potential: this 2019 Cannubi will reward patience over 10–20 years, and likely longer in optimal cellar conditions, gradually gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried herbs.
Production
The Nebbiolo for this wine comes from a tiny 0.7-hectare plot on the iconic Cannubi hill, at around 300 meters above sea level, with a prized south/southwest exposure. The soils here are predominantly sandy with calcareous components, giving Barolos of remarkable perfume, elegance and finesse. The vines are around 50 years old, planted to the traditional Nebbiolo Michet and Lampia clones, naturally yielding small quantities of highly concentrated fruit. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then vinified in line with Chiara Boschis’ philosophy for her Barolo range: meticulous sorting, gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and texture, followed by aging in carefully selected oak that enhances, rather than masks, the Cannubi terroir. The result is a wine that captures the vineyard’s signature balance of fragrance, structure and refinement.
Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, venison and dishes with truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses—think Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Pecorino or well-aged Alpine cheeses—and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully unfold. Decanting 2–3 hours before serving is strongly recommended for this young vintage, helping to soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s layered aromatics.
Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s historic names, revitalized and elevated by the visionary winemaker Chiara Boschis, who has become a reference point in the region.
