Description

The 2019 E. Guigal Château d'Ampuis Magnum is a commanding expression of Côte-Rôtie, captured in an impressive 1.5L format that’s built for the cellar and the table alike. Drawn from some of the appellation’s finest sites along the steep, terraced slopes above the Rhône, it marries power, precision, and Guigal’s hallmark polish. In this vintage, dark, brooding fruit and tightly woven structure promise a long, luxurious evolution in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château d'Ampuis shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, with a dense, almost inky core that clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is intense and layered: graphite, tar, and smoldering embers wrap around ripe dark plums and blackberries, with notes of dark chocolate, cracked black pepper, and baking spices—clove, star anise, and a touch of cinnamon. Hints of violets, dried herbs, and a subtle smoked-meat nuance add further complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied, concentrated, and remarkably textural. The mid-palate is plush and velvety, carrying flavors of blackberry compote, black plum, espresso, and cocoa, lifted by notes of pepper, licorice, and savory dried herbs. The tannins are firm yet refined, giving a powerful frame that never feels harsh, while well-integrated oak brings gentle accents of vanilla and toast. The finish is long, silky, and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and mineral notes. In magnum, its aging potential is outstanding: allow at least 3–6 more years for the structure to relax, and expect it to evolve gracefully for 15–20+ years beyond that, gaining truffle, leather, and gamey complexity over time.

Production
Château d'Ampuis is crafted from some of Guigal’s prime parcels in Côte-Rôtie, drawn from both the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, where steep, terraced vineyards overlook the Rhône River. Here, Syrah thrives on a mosaic of schist, mica, and granite soils, with small proportions of Viognier traditionally co-planted in certain plots, lending aromatic lift and finesse. The fruit is harvested by hand from low-yielding, old vines, allowing only the ripest, healthiest grapes to enter the cellar. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled conditions with extended maceration to extract color, tannin, and aromatic depth, followed by a long élevage in oak barrels—often with a significant proportion of new oak—to shape the wine’s structure and add subtle notes of spice and toast. Bottled with great care, the magnum format further enhances the wine’s capacity to age slowly and harmoniously.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Château d'Ampuis Magnum demands generous, flavorful cuisine. It is superb with roasted or grilled lamb (especially with rosemary and garlic), slow-braised beef short ribs, game dishes such as venison or duck, and richly sauced dishes like beef cheeks or oxtail. It also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes, truffled risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromatics fully unfold. For current drinking, decant the magnum generously—at least 2–3 hours in advance—to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s dark fruit and spice to emerge; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their evolved nuances.

Producer
E. Guigal stands as one of the most influential and respected names in the Rhône Valley. The story begins in 1924, when a young Étienne Guigal started working in the cellars of Vidal-Fleury at just 14 years old. In 1946, having already served as cellar master, he founded his own estate in Ampuis, at the heart of Côte-Rôtie. His son Marcel joined in 1961 and transformed Guigal into an international benchmark, while the third generation, Philippe, now oversees the meticulous production. Guigal pioneered the concept of single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie with the legendary “La Mouline,” “La Landonne,” and “La Turque”—wines that helped put the appellation on the world map. Their philosophy centers on organic practices in the vineyard, low yields, and minimal intervention in the cellar, with an unwavering focus on expressing terroir. Beyond the famous “La, La, La” wines, cuvées such as Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis, Condrieu “La Doriane,” and Hermitage “Ex Voto” are regarded as crown jewels of the Northern Rhône, consistently earning critical acclaim and a devoted following among collectors and enthusiasts.
