Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Dominus shows a dense, opaque dark ruby to almost inky purple hue, hinting immediately at concentration and depth. The nose opens with pure notes of black and red cherries and mixed red berries, then slowly unfurls to reveal layers of mocha, graphite/pencil shavings, dark plum, blackcurrant, leather, tobacco leaf, incense, dried herbs and a subtle, warm earth and burnt soil character. On the palate, this is a focused, medium to full-bodied wine with remarkable tension and freshness wrapped around a core of ripe, dark fruit. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and blackberry are framed by savory notes of cocoa, cedar, dried thyme, tobacco and a fine mineral thread. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine a velvety, silky texture on the long and persistent finish. While already complex, the 2019 Dominus is still youthful and clearly built for aging; it will reward patience over 15–25+ years, gaining even more nuance, softness and aromatic complexity with time in the cellar.

Production
Dominus Estate is rooted in the historic Napanook vineyard in Yountville, one of Napa Valley’s oldest documented vineyard sites (first planted in 1836). The terroir is characterized by well-drained, gravelly and volcanic soils with excellent exposure, fostering low yields and concentrated fruit. Vines are meticulously tended, with careful canopy management and selective harvesting carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. The 2019 Dominus is a classic Bordeaux-style blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Vinification follows a minimalist, precision-driven approach: hand-picked grapes are sorted thoroughly, gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, lending structure and subtle spice without overshadowing the vineyard’s character.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic red best matched with equally refined dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, tournedos Rossini, slow-braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary, or game such as venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses to allow the aromatics to fully develop. Decant generously in its youth for 1.5–3 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; mature bottles will benefit from a gentler, shorter decanting to remove sediment and allow the wine to bloom.

Dominus Estate is the Napa Valley project of Christian Moueix, one of the most influential figures in Bordeaux and the man behind icons such as Pétrus, Trotanoy and La Fleur-Pétrus. The estate occupies the historic Napanook vineyard, a landmark site in Napa first planted in 1836 and purchased in 1946 by visionary winemaker John Daniels. In 1982, Daniels’ daughters entered into partnership with Moueix, leading to the founding of Dominus Estate; by 1995, Moueix had become sole owner. The first Dominus vintage was released in 1983 and quickly gained international acclaim for its refined, Bordeaux-inspired style. Today, Dominus is considered one of Napa Valley’s greatest estates, known for its profound, age-worthy Cabernet blends and for its striking stone winery, built in 1996, which seamlessly integrates with the landscape and symbolizes the deep connection between architecture, terroir and craftsmanship. Notably, Dominus Proprietary Red Wine was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2021, underscoring the estate’s status at the pinnacle of Napa Valley winemaking.
