Description
The 2019 Dominio de Pingus Pingus is one of Spain’s most coveted cult wines, crafted by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Sourced from nearly century-old Tinto Fino vines and produced in minuscule quantities, this is a benchmark expression of the grape and the region. With near-perfect scores (99/100 Parker and 99/100 Sutter), the 2019 vintage stands out as a powerful yet refined wine that marries concentration with remarkable poise.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pingus 2019 is strikingly deep and opaque, veering toward inky black with a dense, viscous appearance. The nose is initially reserved, then slowly unfurls with air to reveal layers of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and redcurrant, intertwined with subtle vanilla, fine leather, and a touch of sweet spice. Underneath lies a faint echo of violets and graphite, signalling both its origin and its precision.
On the palate, the wine is simultaneously powerful and graceful: intensely concentrated yet beautifully balanced by fresh acidity and ultra-fine, youthful tannins. Juicy black and red fruits dominate at first, followed by nuances of cocoa, tobacco leaf, and well-integrated oak that add depth and length. The finish is long, savory, and layered, with a persistent mineral thread and lingering notes of spice and dark berries. Built for the long haul, Pingus 2019 has outstanding aging potential; properly cellared, it should evolve and gain complexity over 20+ years, with its structure and aromatic detail becoming more harmonious and nuanced over time.
Production
Pingus is sourced from old, low-yielding Tinto Fino vines planted in 1929 in two prized sectors of the village of La Horra: Barroso and San Cristóbal. These high-density bush vines grow in poor, limestone- and clay-influenced soils that naturally restrict vigor and concentrate flavor, yielding grapes of extraordinary intensity and character. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, reflecting Sisseck’s commitment to nurturing living soils and healthy, balanced vines. Harvest is carried out by hand with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is meticulous and small-scale, with fermentation in traditional vats followed by aging in a combination of barriques and, for the first time in 2019, large 20,000-liter oak foudres. This shift toward a higher proportion of large-format oak (ultimately envisaged at around 50%) aims to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression while still lending the wine structure and subtle complexity. In September 2021, just 7,900 bottles of the 2019 Pingus were filled, underscoring its extreme rarity.
Food & Serving
Pingus 2019 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game birds, and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as aged Manchego or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol or tannin. Due to its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours before serving for present enjoyment, and longer if you want it to show more of its layered, floral and mineral dimensions.
Producer
Dominio de Pingus was founded in the mid-1990s by Danish-born oenologist Peter Sisseck, who arrived in the then relatively unknown Ribera del Duero with experience and inspiration drawn from Bordeaux’s pioneering “vins de garage.” Recognizing the extraordinary potential of Tinto Fino from very old, low-yielding vines, he created Pingus as a micro-production wine with uncompromising standards in both vineyard and cellar. The very first vintages quickly became legendary, catapulting Pingus to cult status and helping to redefine Ribera del Duero as a source of world-class, age-worthy reds. Today, Dominio de Pingus is regarded as one of Spain’s most important and influential estates, lauded for its biodynamic viticulture, meticulous craftsmanship, and a track record of wines that consistently rank among the finest in the world.
