Description

From one of Burgundy’s most respected names, the 2019 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Baudes captures the pure, perfumed elegance that has made Chambolle legendary among Pinot Noir lovers. Sourced from a small premier cru vineyard lying just below the grand cru Bonnes-Mares, this wine marries finesse with quiet power in a remarkably refined expression. Its complex Jurassic limestone soils and long history—cultivated since Gallo-Roman times and tended by monks in the Middle Ages—give it a distinctive, noble character that shines through in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant, luminous ruby-red hue that hints at both freshness and depth. The nose is intricate yet beautifully poised: violets, black cherries, and red berries weave together with notes of forest floor, truffle, and a gentle touch of game as the wine evolves in bottle. There’s a sense of aromatic lift and precision that is very true to Chambolle-Musigny. On the palate, the tannins are fine, silky, and delicately structured, offering texture without heaviness. The fresh acidity is perfectly balanced with the wine’s supple fruit, creating a harmonious, flowing mouthfeel. Flavors of ripe black cherry, kirsch and subtle candied red fruit are layered with earthy, savory undertones, leading to a long, refined finish that lingers with notes of candied fruit and a whisper of spice. While already seductive in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and balance to develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years, gaining more truffle, game and sous-bois nuances with time.

Production
Premier Cru Baudes is a small, east-facing vineyard with a gentle slope and a complex subsoil of Jurassic limestone—an ideal setting for Pinot Noir to express both fragrance and finesse. Joseph Drouhin farms several parcels in this historic appellation, where vines grow on well-drained, high-quality soils that have been prized since antiquity. The grapes are harvested by hand into small, perforated crates to preserve integrity, followed by meticulous sorting in the winery. Depending on the vintage, 20–50% of the bunches are kept whole to enhance aromatic complexity and texture. Fermentation and maceration last 2–3 weeks in small open-top vats, with punch-downs and pump-overs to gently extract color, flavor, and fine tannins, using only indigenous yeasts. After pressing in a vertical press, the press fractions are carefully separated based on tasting. The wine is then aged for 14–18 months in French oak barrels, around 25% of which are new, allowing the terroir and varietal character to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Baudes is a superb partner for refined dishes that complement its elegance rather than overpower it. Think roast duck with cherries, veal tenderloin, herb-crusted lamb, guinea fowl, or delicate game birds, as well as mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, or refined poultry in cream sauces. It also pairs beautifully with soft, bloomy-rind cheeses such as Brie de Meaux or Chaource. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silkiness. For youthful bottles, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes can help the aromas open; older bottles should be handled delicately, with minimal or no decanting to preserve their evolved bouquet.
