Description
The 2019 Domaine Jacques Prieur Pommard 1er Cru Les Charmots is a meticulously crafted, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most characterful Premier Cru sites. Sourced from a tiny 0.72-hectare plot perfectly positioned halfway up the slope, this wine combines classic Côte de Beaune elegance with the depth and structure Pommard is famed for. The challenging 2019 vintage yielded very low quantities, but fruit of exceptional health and balance, resulting in a wine that is both refined and built to age.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Les Charmots shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful purple reflections, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure red and dark berry fruit—wild cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant—interwoven with notes of violet, rose petal, and a touch of blood orange. With air, more complex layers emerge: warm spice from the oak (clove, nutmeg, subtle vanilla), graphite, and a faint hint of forest floor and crushed stone.
On the palate, this Pommard is firm yet polished, with a core of juicy red and black fruit framed by fine, chalk-dusted tannins. The marly limestone terroir shows through in the wine’s vertical, mineral-driven line and mouthwatering acidity, giving lift and precision to its generous mid-palate. Oak is present but beautifully integrated after 17 months in barrel, adding texture and subtle toast rather than dominating. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, with echoes of spice and stone. While already approachable with decanting, this 2019 has clear aging potential; it should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining more sous-bois, truffle, and gamey nuances over time.
Production
Les Charmots comes from two small parcels totaling just 0.72 hectares, situated halfway up the slope in Pommard and overlooking the famed Premier Cru Les Epenots. The vines enjoy an ideal east to southeast exposure, ensuring early morning light and even ripening, while the shallow, stony, and very permeable marly-limestone soils naturally limit vigor, concentrating flavor and structure in the grapes. In 2019, careful parcel-by-parcel monitoring of ripeness was crucial due to the season’s heat spikes and heterogeneous véraison; harvest was ultimately brought forward to 9 September, with all fruit picked by hand into small crates to preserve integrity. After sorting, the Pinot Noir was fully destemmed, then macerated on the skins for 15 days in open, temperature-controlled oak vats. Twice-daily pigeage during alcoholic fermentation extracted color, fine tannins, and aromatics without harshness. The wine completed 100% malolactic fermentation and was then aged for 17 months in oak barrels, with a significant proportion new, to add depth and complexity while respecting the precision of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Pommard 1er Cru is a superb partner for flavorful dishes that can match its intensity and savoriness. Think classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, or roast duck with cherries, as well as roasted lamb, veal chops, or game birds like pigeon and guinea fowl. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffle dishes, lentils, root vegetables, or creamy gratins—highlight the wine’s mineral and umami notes. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems to allow the aromatics to open fully. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal more floral and spice complexity; with bottle age, a gentle splash-decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
