Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue, edged by youthful purple highlights that hint at its concentration and potential. The nose is expressive yet refined, offering dark cherry, blackcurrant and ripe raspberry layered with violet, rose petal, and hints of forest floor. Subtle notes of sweet spice, cedar, graphite and lightly toasted oak emerge with air, underpinned by mineral tones that speak clearly of its Grand Cru origins. On the palate, this is a structured, powerful Clos Vougeot with a firmly sculpted tannin profile typical of the clay-rich soils. Dense red and black fruits—morello cherry, wild strawberry, blackberry—are framed by fresh acidity and a savoury, almost earthy backbone. The texture is ample and mouth-coating, yet precise, with fine-grained tannins that currently feel youthful and tightly knit. The long finish carries notes of spice, dark chocolate, and a saline, stony lift. While already impressive, this 2019 is built for the cellar and should reward 10–20 years of aging, developing greater complexity, silkier tannins and more pronounced tertiary nuances of truffle, sous-bois and dried flowers.

Production
Clos Vougeot is a single, historic walled vineyard in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where a mosaic of soils and exposures creates wines of remarkable character. The parcels used by Domaine Jacques Prieur lie on clay-rich soils that naturally produce robust, well-structured Pinot Noir with notable depth and aging capacity. In 2019, after a challenging growing season marked by spring frost risk, irregular flowering, summer heatwaves and low yields, the estate carried out meticulous parcel-by-parcel ripeness checks to determine the ideal picking date. Grapes were harvested entirely by hand into small crates, then carefully sorted and fully destemmed. Fermentation took place with a 22-day maceration in open, temperature-controlled oak vats, with twice-daily pigeage to gently extract color, tannin and flavor. The wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was then matured for 22 months in oak barrels, allowing the structure to integrate and the aromatic complexity to deepen while preserving the vineyard’s distinctive identity.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves equally refined cuisine: think roast duck with cherries, pigeon, lamb saddle with herbs, venison or other game birds, as well as richly sauced dishes like beef bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based recipes—morels, porcini, truffle risotto—and mature, earthy cheeses such as aged Comté or Époisses (served with a light hand). Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to reveal its full aromatic range. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the young tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles should be decanted gently and for a shorter period, mainly to separate from any sediment.
