Description

Bottled in magnum for extended aging and added grandeur at the table, the 2019 Domaine Faiveley Nuits‑Saint‑Georges Les Porêts Saint Georges 1er Cru is a powerful, classically built red Burgundy from one of the region’s most respected family domaines. Drawn from a historic Faiveley holding first acquired in the 1870s, this cuvée showcases the muscular, structured side of Nuits‑Saint‑Georges while retaining the estate’s hallmark clarity and finesse. Les Porêts Saint Georges has long been ranked among the finest climats of the village, and in Faiveley’s hands it becomes a deeply expressive, cellar‑worthy Pinot Noir of real pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Premier Cru shows an intense, deep ruby colour, especially concentrated in this magnum format, with luminous edges that hint at its youthful energy. The nose opens with pure black fruit tones—black cherry, blackberry and cassis—layered with notes of dark plum, violet, and a subtle savory edge. Underneath, gentle nuances of fine oak, cocoa, smoked tea, and a light touch of forest floor begin to emerge, reflecting both the limestone-rich soils and careful élevage. On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied and firmly structured, with a generous, almost meaty attack that quickly builds into a crescendo of power and precision. Ripe black fruits are framed by vibrant acidity and a tightly knit tannic backbone that is typical of Nuits‑Saint‑Georges, yet the texture remains polished rather than rustic. Flavours of black cherry, damson and blueberry mingle with hints of licorice, graphite, and subtle spice from well‑integrated oak. The finish is long, mineral and persistent, suggesting outstanding aging potential; in magnum, this 2019 will reward patience over 10–20+ years, gradually gaining complexity, silkiness, and a more haunting bouquet of truffle, sous‑bois and game.

Production
Les Porêts Saint Georges lies just south of the village of Nuits‑Saint‑Georges and shares many characteristics with the famed ‘Les Saint‑Georges’ climat, though with a slightly more rugged, earthy profile. Faiveley’s 1.68 hectares of vines, rooted in deep, stony brown limestone soils, include plantings from 1945 and 1954 alongside younger parcels from 2005, 2011 and 2018, giving a natural balance of concentration and freshness. The grapes are carefully hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted before fermentation to ensure only pristine fruit enters the cuvée. Vinification typically combines whole‑cluster and destemmed fruit, followed by a controlled maceration to extract fine tannins, colour and aromatic depth. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—partly new—to refine structure, deepen complexity and preserve the pure expression of terroir that defines Domaine Faiveley’s style.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Nuits‑Saint‑Georges that shines alongside richly flavoured dishes: think roast duck with cherries, dry‑aged côte de boeuf, venison or other game, braised lamb shank, or a classic Burgundian coq au vin. Earthy accompaniments like wild mushrooms, truffle‑inflected dishes, lentils with lardons, or aged hard cheeses (Comté, Gruyère, mature Tomme) make particularly harmonious partners. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the wine to unfurl; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly for sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and elevated to international prominence by his son Joseph, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic estates and remains firmly in family hands. With around 120 hectares of vines across the Côte d’Or and beyond—including some 10 hectares of Grand Cru and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Cru sites such as Gevrey‑Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux and Montrachet—the domaine is a key ambassador for classic Burgundian craftsmanship. Based in Nuits‑Saint‑Georges, Faiveley is renowned for marrying modern precision with time‑honoured cellar traditions in their 19th‑century caves, crafting wines that faithfully mirror their terroirs. Critics such as Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve have praised the estate as representing the very best of French winemaking, and Les Porêts Saint Georges—Faiveley’s first historic acquisition in the 1870s—remains one of the pillars of its esteemed Nuits‑Saint‑Georges portfolio.
