Description
Domaine Faiveley’s 2019 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is a profound, age-worthy red Burgundy from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered climats. Sourced from the hallowed Grands Echezeaux vineyard in Flagey-Echezeaux, this wine marries depth and power with the precision and finesse that define great Pinot Noir. More reserved in youth than Faiveley’s Échézeaux “En Orveaux”, it already hints at a complex future with its layered aromatics and serious structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru shows a deep, shimmering ruby hue with vibrant reflections, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure, dark berry fruit—b blackberry and ripe raspberry—interwoven with notes of exotic spice, orange zest and a subtle forest-floor complexity that speaks of great terroir and careful élevage.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and tightly knit, with impressive concentration and broad, confident shoulders. The fruit is dense yet refined, framed by fine-grained, powdery tannins that provide both structure and finesse. Layers of black and red berries, delicate spice and earthy undertones unfold gradually, suggesting a long life ahead. While already engaging, this is a Grand Cru clearly built for the cellar; with proper aging, expect greater aromatic complexity, silkier texture and a beautifully harmonious, long finish over the next 10–25 years.
Production
Grands Echezeaux is a celebrated Grand Cru vineyard in Flagey-Echezeaux, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, where shallow limestone soils with clay and excellent drainage naturally limit yields and enhance intensity and finesse. Domaine Faiveley harvests by hand, carefully selecting bunches in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit goes into the final cuvée. The Pinot Noir grapes are traditionally vinified, with a gentle extraction to preserve aromatic purity and structure, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—typically with a significant proportion of new oak—to build depth, complexity and age-worthiness without overwhelming the wine’s terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru calls for refined, flavorful dishes that can match its depth and structure: think roast duck with cherries, pigeon, venison or other game meats, mushroom-based dishes, or truffle-infused cuisine. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gruyère also make an excellent partner. Serve at around 15–16°C (59–61°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and freshness. For young vintages like 2019, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up; older, well-cellared bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter time to preserve delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s most important family-owned domaines, with extensive holdings across the Côte d’Or, including many of the region’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Faiveley has built a reputation for producing structured, terroir-expressive wines that age gracefully and faithfully reflect their origins. Over generations, the family has steadily expanded and refined its vineyard holdings, investing in meticulous vineyard work and modern yet respectful winemaking. Today, Faiveley is recognized as a benchmark producer in Burgundy, consistently earning critical acclaim and playing a key role in upholding the international prestige of the Côte de Nuits’ great Grand Crus such as Grands Echezeaux.
