Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2019 Domaine Faiveley Corton "Clos des Cortons" Monopole Grand Cru is one of Burgundy’s true benchmarks for age-worthy red wine. As the only red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune and the flagship of Domaine Faiveley, this single-clos, family-owned monopole expresses Pinot Noir at its most poised and powerful. Sourced from a historic 2.76-hectare vineyard owned by the Faiveley family since 1874, it marries grandeur, precision and an unmistakable sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Corton Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple rim, indicative of its concentration and long life ahead—especially in magnum. The nose is intense and refined, opening with ripe red berries—cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant—layered with notes of black raspberry, warm spice, dried rose, and a subtle earthy-mineral undertone. As it unfurls, hints of sweet baking spices, graphite, and a touch of forest floor add further complexity. On the palate, the 2019 Clos des Cortons Faiveley is both powerful and supremely elegant. The attack is silky yet structured, with juicy red and black fruit at the core, supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry and cranberry intertwine with savory spice, mineral notes and a faint touch of cocoa and smoked tea. The wine is beautifully balanced between softness and grip, with a long, persistent finish that lingers on red fruit and stony, saline nuances. In magnum, the aging potential is outstanding: while already impressive after a decant, it will continue to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, leather and undergrowth.

Production
Clos des Cortons Faiveley occupies a privileged position on the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, where slopes rich in limestone, marl and clay, dotted with iron-rich oolitic stones, give the wines their hallmark power, depth and mineral precision. Pinot Noir vines were planted in successive waves from 1932 through 2019, ensuring a complex mix of old-vine intensity and younger vine energy. The vineyard is tended with great care, with meticulous green work and selective harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. In the winery, traditional Burgundian know-how is combined with modern precision: careful sorting, cold maceration and controlled fermentations extract pure fruit and fine tannins without excess. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new) in Faiveley’s historic 19th-century cellars, where cool, stable conditions allow for slow, seamless integration of wood, fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Corton in magnum is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast duck with cherries, beef Wellington, venison or other game birds, slow-braised lamb shank, or a truffled mushroom risotto. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or an old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours before serving now, and even longer if opened in its first decade, to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley has grown over seven generations into one of Burgundy’s most respected and influential family estates, with around 120 hectares of prime vineyard holdings. With parcels in many of the Côte d’Or’s greatest names—Gevrey-Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux, Montrachet and more—Faiveley is a key ambassador for classic, terroir-driven Burgundy. The Clos des Cortons Faiveley monopole, acquired in 1874, is the domaine’s crown jewel and a symbol of its deep roots in the region. Renowned critics such as Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve have praised the estate as representing the full glory of French winemaking, and today Faiveley is celebrated for crafting wines of clarity, elegance and precision that faithfully reflect their individual climats and vintages.
