Description

2019 Domaine Faiveley Corton "Clos des Cortons" Monopole Grand Cru is one of Burgundy’s iconic reds, coming from the only red Grand Cru on the Côte de Beaune. This is Faiveley’s flagship wine, a true monopole (single-owner vineyard) that has belonged to the family since 1874 and spans a commanding 2.76 hectares. Its distinctive name, Clos des Cortons Faiveley, dates back to the 1930s, when the family added their name to the original climat to underline its singular identity and avoid confusion with neighboring parcels.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Clos des Cortons Faiveley shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple highlights that hint at its concentration and long life ahead. The nose is intense and refined, opening with ripe red berries—think wild strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry—layered with notes of blood orange zest, exotic spice, and a touch of floral rose and peony. With air, more complex aromas emerge: hints of black tea, subtle smoke, forest floor, and warm iron-like mineral tones that are so typical of Corton. On the palate, this Grand Cru is simultaneously powerful and poised. The attack is generous and silky with succulent, juicy red fruit, quickly framed by a firm yet fine-grained tannic structure. Spiced cherry, red plum, and cranberry are intertwined with savory notes of licorice, clove, and a distinct, earthy minerality. The mid-palate is dense and compact but not heavy, carried by vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and lifted. The finish is long, persistent, and mouthcoating, with a beautiful interplay of softness and firmness that promises superb aging potential. While already seductive in its youth with proper aeration, this 2019 will reward patience and can confidently age 15–25 years or more in a good cellar, gaining further complexity, truffle notes, and silken texture over time.

Production
Clos des Cortons Faiveley lies on the storied hill of Corton in the northern Côte de Beaune, where the slope, aspect, and soils give Pinot Noir an especially noble expression. The terroir is dominated by limestone, marl, and clay, scattered with iron-rich oolitic stones that imbue the wine with its characteristic depth, structure, and mineral tension. The vines are of considerable age, planted in successive waves from 1932 through 2019, contributing both concentration and complexity. Faiveley practices meticulous vineyard management—careful pruning, green harvesting when necessary, and manual picking at optimal ripeness—to ensure pristine fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted by hand, then vinified traditionally with temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins without harshness. Aging typically takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new oak, allowing the wine to gain texture, spice, and harmony while always preserving the purity of fruit and the signature Corton minerality.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic red Burgundy that shines alongside refined, flavorful dishes. Think roasted duck breast with cherries, venison or hare in a red-wine reduction, côte de boeuf, pigeon, or slow-braised lamb. Earthy preparations—mushrooms, truffle-infused sauces, and root vegetables—echo the wine’s savory depth, while aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic complexity. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to open up the nose and soften the structure; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted briefly only to remove sediment.

Producer
Maison Joseph Faiveley, founded in 1825 and still family-owned and operated, is one of Burgundy’s most respected and historic domaines. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the family has patiently built up an exceptional mosaic of vineyard holdings across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, with Clos des Cortons Faiveley as their crown jewel and sole monopole Grand Cru. Over generations, Faiveley has become a benchmark for classically styled, ageworthy Burgundy—wines that express their terroir with clarity and precision. The domaine has invested heavily in vineyard work and modern yet sensitive winemaking, earning consistent critical acclaim and cementing its reputation as a leading force in the region, particularly for its top Grand Cru bottlings like this Corton.
