Description

Domaine Faiveley’s 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a powerful yet refined expression of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most seductive terroir. Sourced from old vines in one of Burgundy’s most coveted Grand Cru sites, this is a Pinot Noir that marries depth, structure and velvet texture in classic Côte de Nuits style. As one of the crown jewels of Faiveley’s portfolio, it offers a benchmark interpretation of Charmes-Chambertin from a superb vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet reflections hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is immediately expressive and complex, opening with wild berry notes—blackberries, wild strawberries and black cherries—interwoven with orange zest, incense, rose petals and a refined, smoky mineral character. Subtle undertones of smoked meat, spice and fine oak add further layers as the wine breathes. On the palate, this is full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with the palpable concentration that comes from old vines and low yields. The fruit is vivid and pure, supported by broad, sculpted tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything poised and fresh. Flavours of dark cherry, raspberry coulis and cranberry are wrapped in savoury nuances of forest floor, graphite and delicate toast. The finish is long, persistent and expansive, combining muscular structure with striking elegance. Already alluring in youth, this Grand Cru has the depth and balance to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness with cellar time.

Production
Charmes-Chambertin lies in the northern part of the Côte d’Or, in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, with Faiveley’s parcels facing east to capture the gentle morning sun—ideal for slow, even ripening of Pinot Noir. The domaine owns 0.81 ha within this prestigious Grand Cru, planted in 1949, 1955, 1966 and 1983, which ensures naturally low yields of around 37 hl/ha and superb fruit concentration. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and brought swiftly to the cellar, where they undergo a short cold maceration before fermentation. Vinification takes place partly in truncated wooden vats, with a total cuvaison of around 15–18 days. After fermentation, a vertical press is used to obtain exceptionally pure, fine juice. The wine is then aged for 16–18 months in the estate’s 19th-century vaulted cellars in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in predominantly new French oak barrels (around two-thirds new) carefully selected for their fine grain and light toast, allowing the terroir to shine through while adding discreet structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru’s combination of power and elegance makes it an exceptional partner for refined, flavourful dishes. Think roast duck with cherry or orange glaze, pigeon or quail, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison or other game birds with wild mushrooms, as well as truffle-inflected dishes and mature, nutty cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to rest upright for a time. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the aromatic complexity unfurl and soften the tannins; with extended bottle age, a gentle, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment is recommended.

Producer
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic family estates, now in its seventh generation of family stewardship. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the domaine has patiently assembled an enviable 127 hectares of vineyards across the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, including 12 Grand Cru and 25 Premier Cru sites, as well as several prized monopoles. Under the leadership of Erwan Faiveley, the estate has combined meticulous vineyard work and low yields with a thoughtful, modern approach to winemaking that still respects Burgundian tradition—long élevage in carefully chosen French oak in their 19th-century cellars. This balance of innovation and heritage has cemented Faiveley’s reputation as a leading reference for classically styled, terroir-driven Burgundy of consistently high prestige.
